Is digital photography better than traditional film for your small business?

ladywithcamera36669259.jpg Should you choose digital photography or traditional 35 mm photography?Does it matter? What are the pros and cons of both digital photography and 35 mm photography? Here are the pros and cons of both, assuming that if you take 35 mm photos, you will be scanning them into your computer for the purposes of easy distribution, storage, and photo editing.

  1. It's all about the resolution
The reason that most people who choose 35 mm over digital choose 35 mm is because of the incomparable resolution offered by 35 mm film.Let's look at the pixels to prove this point. While 35 mm cameras have a range in pixels from 8 to 15 million, 35 mm cameras can actually go up to 20 million pixels. While there are a number of digital cameras that have very high pixel resolution, none of them come close to the 20 million pixels offered by 35 mm cameras.

However, this difference in resolution and pixels doesn't mean that digital cameras are a waste of money and that you should just go for a 35 mm camera instead of digital.More and more digital cameras are offering better and better resolution. Also, digital cameras offer resolution that is more than adequate for amateur photographers. For example, the Canon D60 has 6 million 12 bit pixels, which means that most people who even want really great resolution will be more than satisfied with the Canon D60.

Also remember that you need to get a high quality printer. If you are using a 35 mm camera and you are scanning in your photos, you need a printer that can produce that kind of resolution in your prints. It should be at least 4000 dpi.

So why would you want higher resolution?Well, there are a number of reasons:

    • Scale-down
This means that the higher the resolution of the original photo, the better it will look when you scale it down. The color will also look better in the scaled-down version.

    • Zoom and crop
If your original photo has higher resolution, then when you zoom in to focus on a particular area, or when you crop your photo, then you will have better resolution rather than the fuzzy image that you typically get.

    • Better larger prints
If you ever decide that you want to blow up your photos, then the higher the original resolution is, then the better your larger print will be.You might think that you just want a 5 x 7 right now, but in a year you might want an 8 x 10.Better to prepare now rather than kick yourself when you end up with a disappointingly fuzzy photo.

  2. Photos in low light
35 mm cameras take better photos in low light than digital cameras do.Digital cameras simply aren't as able to do the extended exposure necessary for great low light and nighttime photos. However, the advantage of using a digital camera is that you can immediately see if your photo turned out. Then you can adjust the exposure time until you get the photo that you want. Also, digital cameras are becoming better and better at taking low light and nighttime photos.
  3. Improving range
Generally speaking, 35 mm cameras have a better range than digital cameras. This means that your darker shadows and the light areas of your photos will be more defined and have greater subtlety and range of color.Digital cameras are not as good at capturing high contrast images. However, the higher the bit of the digital camera, the better it is, so if you want to shoot photos of an eclipse, you might be able to find a higher bit camera that can do the job.
