Podcasting versus video podcasting

Here are some of the advantages for both audio and video podcasting.

Advantages of audio podcasting:

  • Audio is a background type of media, where as video is a media that is designed to be watched. The great thing about audio podcasting is that you can listen to it while you are doing numerous things. But when it comes to video podcasting you have to sit down and watch it. You can't do something else while you are watching a video podcast because it is designed to be watched not listened to.
  • Audio podcasting in general takes less production time, but depending on the audio you are creating it can take quite awhile to complete. This is because a video clip has to be edited and filmed, where as with an audio podcast you can record what you are saying and edit it or leave it alone. So video podcasts tend to be more complicated so they can take all day to edit and publish, where as a few minutes of an audio podcast in about an hour.
  • Audio requires less bandwidth. This is true because audio files are smaller than video files and because they are smaller there isn't much data to transfer which means you use less bandwidth. Bandwidth is your primary cost of podcasting.
  • Audio podcasts can contain more information. This is because listeners can handle listening to information for longer periods of time than they can watch a video with information. This is partly due to the fact that with you audio you can accomplish other things while listening to the audio. But because people will listen to audio longer you can include more information, with video you have about five minutes to present the information.
  • Audio formats and compression are easier to use and understand. It is harder to choose the right media type for your video podcast and many times you will have to use multiple formats so that more users can watch your video. But with the MP3 format almost every user can listen to it, it is supported by most computers.

Advantages of video podcasts:

  • Visual aspect allows for a more powerful message. This is because you have both audio and visual elements you can create a stronger impression and it can last longer. Also people can relate your message to the video that they are watching. For example when people think of Michael Jordan they tend to think of Nike Air's.

  • Some advertisers prefer video. This is based on what was discussed in the first point. So if you offer video podcasting you might find it easier to attract advertisers.

  • Video can be viral. People tend to pass along video clips to other people and they also tend to talk about video clips more then they do audio information. People just love to share funny video clips, there is no known reason except it is speculated that the engagement of the short video is usually something funny that just has to be passed along.

Some other things to take into consideration when trying to decide between audio podcasting and video podcasting are:

  • Do you really need somebody to convey your message, such as a "talking head"? A talking head is just somebody you hire to talk in the background of your video, while people are watching it; it is a very common practice, so you should try to avoid it if you can.

  • What are your reasons for having visuals? Is there something that is really compelling or are you doing it just because everybody else is? Remember you want your podcast, whether audio or video to stand out.

  • If you are doing a podcast that offers tutorials visuals are actually rather helpful in helping to teach the concept clearly.

  • You can also use both audio and video, either together or separate.

Just remember that both formats have their advantages and disadvantages and there is no wrong choice. What you need to do is choose the format that is right for your needs.
