Possible problems with digital photography

While digital photography has quickly become a popular method of taking pictures, it doesn't mean that this is the best way to take pictures. Both traditional and digital photography have their advantages and disadvantages, nothing in this world is perfect. But before you decide on which method is right for you take a quick look at some possible problems in digital photography that you won't find in traditional photography.

Here are some possible problems with digital photography.

  • Digital abuse - this is a problem that is already seen in digital photography and refers to the fact that people who are trying to take pictures rely on other tools, such as Photoshop to remove unwanted objects in the background, change the lighting, create wanted objects, etc. These users are relying on Photoshop to correct their mistakes or fix their pictures so that they are perfect, what they don't realize is that PhotoShop can't fix everything, it is a computer program that is supposed to be used as a tool to enhance photographs. Your best bet is to do the job right the first time rather than relying on Photoshop to fix your picture problems.
  • Cost - of course the initial cost for any type of professional camera is going to be expensive, in fact the initial costs for digital and traditional photography are about the same. But with digital photography you are going to have numerous extra costs because you constantly have to upgrade and update your equipment because computer equipment and applications become obsolete faster than anything else on the market, which means you every few years you are going to have to spend your initial costs all over again just so you can stay current and continue to work and remain competitive. Not too mention the costs you are going to incur to replace components if your system breaks down.
  • Time - this problem goes hand in hand with the cost problem because you are going to end up losing money on the time you spend with your digital photography problems. You can end up spending time getting to know new systems just so you can fully understand the system and how it can be used with digital photography. You will also end up spending time trying to save your old files if they are not compatible with your new programs and if you can't figure out how to transfer your files over you are going to have to try and find somebody who can, etc.
  • Lack of future accessibility - while your digital files are saved onto your hard drive that can actually become a problem. This becomes a problem because of how fast things change in the world of computers and how fast things become obsolete; there is no guarantee that your files will be accessible forever. And if you save files to disk for back ups like most people do, what happens if those disks become corrupted or if your new equipment doesn't recognize currently formatted files.
  • Recalibration - digital photography requires constant recalibration on all parts of your system because of the fact that your settings do not remain fixed, no matter what the manufacturer's claims. And if you use an outside service center you are going to have problems because your calibration and theirs is usually different, so your calibration ends up meaning nothing when you are working with other providers.

Just remember that just because a system isn't perfect doesn't mean that you shouldn't use it, no matter which method you use, traditional or digital, you are going to run into some possible problems. But the main problems you are going to see with digital photography are going to involve the computer and computer applications.
