Being outdated can make your business fall behind. But buying new equipment every time an upgrade comes along will make you fall behind financially. How do you keep your business up to date without going broke?

There are some simple things that you can do to keep your business on the cutting edge of technology and keep your expenses at a minimum.

Your Computer

Surf the web for free software. Things that are important to your computer's safety like a firewall, anti-virus software, as well as adware and spyware protection. These will keep your information safe as well as any customer information.
Keep updating these regularly and your computer will be on the cutting edge of safety.
Make sure you have a current tax software at tax time, this won't be free, but with the tax advantages it will give you it will be a good investment.
When you initially invest in a computer, it is a good idea to purchase one that is upgradeable. This will help you keep your computer up to date without having to buy a whole new computer every year.

Your Website

Make sure that your website is easily accessible. Keep in mind that many surfers are now branching off of the PC and using mobile devices. Make sure that your website is compatible with all devices.
Are your FAQ updated regularly? The questions should be updated to answer new rising questions.
Is all of your information correct? Make sure that if something has changed that you have informed internet customers. They will not stick around if they cannot contact you.

Your Office

If your office requires equipment, make sure that it is regularly maintained. You will avoid costly repair bills if you keep your equipment such as telephones, fax machines, copiers, and printers in good condition.
With office equipment upgrades are not necessary right away as computer upgrades can be. It is ok to wait until the machine is beyond repair to go for the new state of the art one.

Your Staff

Make sure that your staff has good communication equipment. This may be cell phone, walkie-talkies, or an intercom system. This will not need to be upgraded very often, but it will help you to keep your staff working as a team.
Make sure your staff is well informed. Keep them up to date on what you are selling and what services you offer. The more current the information from your staff, the more satisfied customers you will have.

Marketing

Know what customers want. Be aware of what your customers are looking for and what you offer. Make sure that you are taking care of any customer complaints quickly.
Know your audience. If your audience changes, you need to change with it. Make sure that you are appealing to the right people at the right time.
Be sure that your information is current. If you are advertising make sure that you are portraying accurate information. This is especially true if you are reusing old coupons or ads, make sure that the dates have been changed as well as any other information that has changed since you last used them.

Keeping the small things up to date will help you keep your business running smooth. Don't always run out and buy the newest item on market, give it time. This will help you see if any other consumers have had problems with it. Why be the guinea pig, someone else can waste their money on that. You just be a wise and up to date consumer.
