The hard cold facts about podcasting

While podcasting is the newest thing to hit the internet and many people are jumping on the bandwagon it is important for you to know the hard cold facts about podcasting before you start creating those podcasts.

Fact one:
Podcasting is not just simply a link that you provide to an MP3 file that people can download from off your website. Although they can download it to a portable media device to listen to just putting up the MP3 file does not make it a podcast. In order for it to be a podcast the MP3 file or audio file must be delivered off a website through an RSS feed. Not to mention the fact that using RSS on your podcast has other advantages such as: setting up a subscription encourages people to come back to your site and its easy to use and once you understand the tags you can edit it in simple text editors.

Fact two:

The term podcast came from the terms "iPod" and "broadcast". It came from the fact that the original creators of podcasts used iPods to listen to their RSS broadcasts.

Fact three:
Podcasts were created by Adam Curry and Dave Winer. Adam Curry started writing the first podcasting software and Dave Winer is the person who created the RSS feed for blogs, which allowed users to be notified when a blog was updated. Adam Curry approached Dave Winer to update his RSS feed to include audio files, so that if a user choose they could be updated to any new podcasts immediately.

Fact four:
You do not have to subscribe to a podcast in order to listen to it. But if you want to be updated immediately as to any new podcasts in the series or any other new information you will have to subscribe to that website.

Fact four:
While podcasts can include music like a radio it is not like a radio because you can listen to previous podcasts, where as with a radio you only get live feeds. Also with podcasts you can pick and choose what you want to listen to, even if you download an entire radio show you can still fast forward through parts you do not wish to hear. With the radio you are just stuck listening to it. Plus you can set up your iPod to check for updates on occasion and when there is a new update iTunes will automatically download it for you.

Fact five:
Podcasts can be updated as often as a person creates new materials. Some podcasts are updated every month, every day or every week. Some podcasts are even updated more frequently than that, although that is not very common.

Fact six:
While anybody can do podcasting there are some tips you should follow to be sure that podcasting is something that is right for you. Don't simply start creating podcasts because everybody else is doing it, this probably means that not many people will subscribe to your podcast and you might lose interest in creating them rather quickly. Here are some other tips about creating podcasts that you should consider before doing it.

  • If you don't have decent recording equipment you should not start podcasting until you get some because people do not want to listen to poorly recorded podcasts.

  • Make sure that you have some interesting subject matter; people won't listen to podcasts that are boring or just people reading their written work into a microphone. Some things work better than others when it comes to podcasting.

  • Make sure that when you decide to create podcasts you have enough material on your subject to create weekly updates to your podcast or that you can come up with new subjects in a few weeks. If you don't continuously provide your listeners with new content they will most likely unsubscribe from your website.
