Tips for choosing the right modem

Here are some tips for choosing the right modem for your needs. There are many options available for modems for your computers. There are dial up modems, cable modems, modems for DSL, there are wireless modems and much more. The main thing that you will want to look at as you are reviewing the different types of modems is how much do you want to pay, and how fast do you want to move through the web.

Tip #1

Look for the V.92 modem standard. This is the standard for right now. This modem is usually standard with both the older and the newer computer options. It has also been adopted as standard by many of the ISPs or Internet Service Providers on the market today. This is considered a dial up modem. This modem type will connect to the Internet through your telephone system. It works as 56K for the most part and is generally fast enough for emails, file transfers that are limited, and standard surfing.

Tip #2

If you are good with paying a little more, $40 per month on average will get you a much higher Internet connection. This is through a Cable modem, ISDN modem, or DSL Digital Subscriber Line and Optical. On average these modems can get your speed up to 1.5 to 6 MBS. This is like 10 times faster than that of a dial up modem.

Tip #3

If you are already paying for a standard phone line for your telephone and do not mind sharing the use of your phone line for your Internet use, then you will find that the dial up modem is probably fine. However if you are going to get a separate line for your Internet, you might as well go high speed, because the cost is very compatible.

Tip #4

This is an easy way to look at the numbers for the difference between the dial up modem, and the high-speed Internet connections. Dial up is 54,000 bits per second; the DSL will be around 5,000,000 bits per second, and the optical is around 14,000,000. The biggest difference is how fast the information can go and come from your computer.

Tip #5

If you are into gaming, it is usually always best, and even times necessary to have at least the minimum high-speed connection. This will make it smoother as you move around in the virtual worlds.

Tip #6

If you are going to be doing file sharing, video conferencing, or other types of high bandwidth uses with your Internet, you will want to at least have the DSL modem.

Tip #7

Do some shopping around. You can find great deals through the different ISPs and through the different manufacturers of the modems that are available. In fact, if you work with the different ISP providers, you will find that they offer a modem and other equipment in order to entice you to use their service.

Tip #8

Find the right modem that meets your needs. There is no reason to purchase a modem that will not do what you need it to do. On the flip side, there is no reason to purchase a modem that will do more than what you will need.

These are some great tips for choosing the right modem for you. The main thing to remember is that the equipment is only part of what you will need to get set up on the Internet. When it comes down to it, the entire package of ISP, modem and other equipment will be what it takes to make it all work.
