Tips for taking digital photos of children

Do you want to take some great digital photos of your children?Children are busy, active people, and they sometimes can cause quite a challenge for a parent photographer to capture them in a picture! However, there are a couple things that you can do to make sure that you get some great photographs of your kids. Here are a couple of suggestions:

  1. Try using Sport Action mode:If you have an especially active, wiggly little child, you might want to consider taking the photo of your child in Sport Action mode. This digital camera photographic mode is specialized to taking pictures of people in motion, so that they look like they are "frozen" in time. This type of approach might be especially good if your child has a hard time keeping still for a photograph. In addition, these types of shots look great when used to capture a child playing - action shots in the swimming pool with water, on the playground slide, or on the trampoline can turn out looking fantastic!

If you want to have even more control over the "frozen in time" shot of your child, you can set your digital camera to Shutter Priority Mode. Then, you can switch to a faster shutter speed like 1/5000s, which will allow your children to be captured "in action."

  2. Be aware of the lighting:The lighting in the photograph of your child is very important, for lighting can really make or break the picture. You should especially be aware of lighting if you are using Shutter Priority Mode to capture your children in motion. If the shutter speed is fast and there isn't sufficient light, then the picture of your child will not turn out.You can fix this problem by modifying the ISO sensitivity setting on your digital camera. You should change the setting anywhere from 200 to 400.

In addition, you will also want to make sure that the lighting in your picture is coming from the right direction. For example, if your children are in front of the light, then their face will be in shadow. You don't want this to happen! If you are outside, you don't want to have the sun shining in their faces either, because this will cause your kids to squint. The sun also can cast some really unbecoming shadows when it shines right into a person's face.Instead, you should adjust yourself and your kids to be in a place where the light source is coming from the side. This generally will create the best kind of lighting for the picture. If you are indoors, you should also be aware of windows.Sometimes the light coming from a window can add a great "soft lighting" effect in a photograph.

  3. Fill the whole picture plane:When taking photographs of your children, it is a good idea to fill-up as much of the picture frame as possible. The details of your children's face and expression will be the most interesting thing that you will want to capture - it looks a lot more interesting than the awkward head-to-toe pictures of children, who uncomfortably wait for you to take their picture.Instead, you should zoom in on your child and take a fuller-framed shot of him or her. When you zoom in, make sure that you use the optical zoom instead of the digital zoom. The optical zoom is the function on your camera where the lens physically moves forward when you "zoom-in."By using the optical zoom, you will ensure that your child's digital photograph remains in a higher quality resolution.
