When people go out shopping for something new, they usually end up buying from the top brands of whatever it is they are looking for. The same goes for digital video cameras. Whether you are going cheap or going all out, there is a brand and model that should match exactly what your needs demand.

The top brands of digital video cameras are Sony, Canon, JVC, Panasonic, and Samsung. These top brands are constantly competing with each other to have the newest and greatest for the lowest price around. Having this competition is good for innovation because it keeps the ideas coming and improvements are always being made to the newest models of digital video cameras. There are constant arguments as to which brand is the best digital video camera manufacturer. Winning an argument is difficult because each brand has its strengths and its weaknesses in the different arenas of digital video.

Sony and Canon are both recognized for making outstanding digital video cameras. Between the two, they cover the lower end market and the higher end market. The less expensive cameras, such as the Canon Elura and the Sony Handycam, deliver excellent video for a fair price. Sony was the first to enter the digital video market for consumers by introducing the digital 8 format. The idea was that people who had been shooting with 8mm and Hi 8mm cameras for years and years could put their old tapes straight into the camera and it would convert it into a digital format automatically. This caught on like hot cakes for breakfast. Canon followed up that move by greatly improving the performance of their Hi 8 cameras. Up to this point in time, if buying non digital, Canon Hi 8 cameras deliver the best video possible on the format. Nowadays, Canon is the king of the high end market with the XL and GL cameras. These series of cameras make broadcast quality video and audio with an affordable price for the serious videographer.

Panasonic the past few years has become the dark horse of digital video cameras. Their high end and low models are giving Sony and Canon a run for their money. Panasonic is the first to put the professional quality 3CCD chip into a lower end camera. It gives the camera an edge over all other a thousand dollars or less. They are manufacturing high quality professional grade cameras as well, which is seriously challenging Canon's XL series. It will be interesting to see what the future has in store for Panasonic digital video cameras.

JVC and Samsung are the unsung heroes of the digital video camera market. They aren't the stars because, well, quite honestly they aren't the best. They make good video cameras if you're on a budget and actually deliver decent quality if you're not a picky person. While JVC does make higher end cameras, it would be better to just by the XL1 and just stick with lower end JVC. Samsung products usually don't have too many problems, but JVC is notorious for manufacturing unreliable. They would be the Chevy of cameras. These two brands, while not the very best, they are still good enough to be a top contender. It would definitely not be a waste of time to see what they have to offer when shopping for a camera.

To find out more about these top brands, read about their products in consumer reports and online reviews. As you read and see for yourself what people actually think about these brands and their products, it will be obvious what is would be the right camera for yourself. Go shop and be happy.
