What is RSS and when do you use it?
What this means to us as browsers of the internet is that with all the information out there, and all the articles written on the internet, it is easier to go from one site, to another by simply using this Really Simple Syndication or RSS. Years ago the managers of newspapers figured out that with all the articles and stories that were written by other writers that were not on their payroll could be used to get more readers. The way this could be done was by using the RSS and XML option. RSS is a very simple way that several sites can share millions of articles and headlines. RSS is used to keep track of the articles, and make it easier for viewers to access these articles and information. Netscape created the idea of RSS, when they were trying to become part of the portal business. They wanted to use an XML format that would increase the usability and access of other stories to their site. However, when they moved out of the realm of the portal business, they dropped the use of RSS .91. At this point other developers from UserLand Software then picked up the RSS .91 and started to develop it further. UserLand then came up with .92, .93 and .94. At about this time in RSS history, another independent non-commercial group developed RSS 1.0. This development was based on the original principals of RSS. This same group eventually released RSS 2.0.
It really does not matter which RSS you use, unless you are the one that is building their own aggregate or program to read RSS feeds. For the most part, there are some basics that stand true with just about every version of RSS you go with. - The structure is XML. This in fact means that it must be well formed; include a prolog, and DTD. The elements must be closed. With these elements, a programmer, or you can create your own RSS feeds. This is a thing when you are trying to set up your own RSS. The process for completing these types of RSS feeds does tend to be tedious. Therefore if it is not an area that you are comfortably working in this type of technical environment, then be sure to have some help to make this work correctly. This is what an RSS is, and when you should use it. There are also other details that you should look at when deciding what kind of feeds you want to use. However, for the most part, it really is not that different than simply having a link to other resources that are similar to your own. |
