Workplace illness causing setbacks

patient16444665.jpgJust about any workplace illness can cause a setback for the company. Some of these setbacks are small, and some can be large. This article discusses several of the most common workplace illnesses that cause workplace setbacks.

Colds and flu

One employee that comes to work with a cold or flu can just about ensure that at least a few more employees will be out the following week, with even more than that a few days later. The cold and flu viruses are very easy to spread. Sometimes employees can spread these viruses to other employees in the workplace without even knowing there are sick since they may not be exhibiting symptoms of a cold or the flu.

With so many employees absent from work because of these illnesses, a cold and the flu can definitely cause setbacks for a company. And employees that decide to come into work the one, two, or three days that they feel very sick can cause setbacks from their lower quality of work as well.

Stress and anxiety

Employees that suffer from stress and anxiety disorders that stem from the workplace can definitely cause setbacks. First of all, the work that these employees do is not usually up to par. But also stress and anxiety can contribute to problems with the musculoskeletal system, they are a risk for heart disease, and panic disorders. Also, stress and anxiety can weaken an employee's immune system and can cause them to be sick more often and spread germs to other employees as well.

Upper extremities

Many workplaces have setbacks that are causes by employees who are suffering from upper extremity illnesses or problems. When employees have poor posture, repeat certain motions all day, and apply a lot of force to their upper extremities when doing tasks they can have problems with their elbows, wrists, fingers, and shoulders.

Some of the workplace illnesses that deal with upper extremities include wrist tendinitis, epicondylitis-or tennis elbow, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Of course the solution to the problem will vary depending on the workplace illness that the employee is experiencing. It is important that an employee gets these problems checked out to make sure that worse issues besides just poor posture, and repetitive motion can be ruled out.

Allergies

Allergies are another workplace illness than can cause setbacks for the company. Mold can be found in the carpet, plumbing, ventilation, and insulation of just about any type of workplace. This mold can cause allergic reactions in many employees. Asbestos is also another culprit of workplace allergies. But asbestos is very dangerous and aside from allergies it can also cause diseases such as lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis.

Lower back

Another common workplace illness is problems with the lower back. Employees who sit at a computer all day, or lift, twist, and bend all day can all experience lower back problems. An employee's back cannot take a lot of the stress that it is required to take each day at work. Not addressing and taking care of the problem can result in permanent damage.

It is important that an employee has proper posture when sitting at a desk all day. And employees who have to lift must lift with their legs. It is also a good idea for all employees to have a strengthening and stretching program that they participate in each day. This can help them keep their lower back strong, limber, and healthy.
