Keeping your office fit and thin

manatfinishline32151143.jpgBeing fit and thin is important for a number of reasons. It can help decrease a person's risk for weight-related health risks such as heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes. It can also increase a person's energy level, flexibility, and overall health, making them feel more energetic and healthy.

If you are an employer, having employees who are overweight or obese can actually end up costing your company money. Obesity results in increased health problems, which means more sick days and lower productivity in the office. It also results in higher insurance costs.

Keeping your office fit and thin should be a priority not only for the health and well being of your employees, but also to keep your costs down and your productivity high.

But because most insurance companies don't cover any kind of weight reduction surgeries or programs, it can be difficult to encourage employees to lose weight. But people who have a support system that will help them stay fit and thin, like an office, will be more likely to work together to stay in shape.

The following are a few things you can do to keep your office fit and thin
:

  • Start with a wellness fair. You can introduce options for health and fitness with a wellness fair. Insurance companies will typically send representatives to test body fat, cholesterol, and discusses proper nutrition and exercise form with employees. This is a great way to motivate and educate employees and get them started on the right track.
  • Implement company-wide exercise programs. Start an exercise program where employees can track their progress. Provide a way to track their miles or minutes spent exercising on the company website, or make a special spreadsheet and have them turn it in at the end of each week or month for incentives. Encourage everyone to get involved and have managers participate as well, to set a good example.
  • Encourage smart snacking. Oftentimes, managers will bring in donuts, candy, or other treats to the office. While this is nice on occasion, too much of this will keep your employees from being fit and thin, especially if they have sedentary jobs. If you are going to bring food to the office, make sure it's healthy. Switch donuts and sugary snacks for fruit and vegetable trays.
  • Offer incentives. You can offer incentives for pounds lost, such as cash or gift cards or extra time off. However, it is better to reward healthy habits that lead to sustained weight loss, like exercise, instead of rewarding for pounds lost. This will result in lasting weight loss, rather than temporary.
  • Start sports teams. Some people hate the thought of exercising at a gym. Try implementing some office-wide sports teams that will help keep your office fit and thin. Put a volleyball net on your property, if you own it, or go to a nearby park for softball or soccer games. This is a fun way to keep everyone fit.
  • Make it convenient. Consider having a gym put in the office that employees can access, or reimburse them for gym passes. Get rid of the candy bowls throughout the office and stock them with fruit instead. People are more likely to exercise and eat healthy when it is convenient.

Employees who are fit and thin are healthier and more productive. These are a few suggestions for keeping your office fit and thin.
