Simple changes to make in the office to improve employee health

ladyspresentation26239036.jpgIf you are like most people with full time jobs, you spend most of your day in the office. As a result, the choices you make while at work can influence your overall health and that of your employees.

Healthy employees are more productive, take less sick days, and result in lowered insurance costs. As a manager or business owner then, it only makes sense to make your workplace as healthy as possible.

But you don't have to make huge changes or spend a lot of money to improve employee health around the office. The following are some simple changes to make in the office to improve employee health:

  • Keep your workstations clean. Studies have shown that the average office desk has more germs than a public toilet. For this reason, keep your workstations, cubicles, and equipment as clean as possible. Provide cleaning wipes (you can get large containers of bleach wipes at places like Costco inexpensively) for your employees to use and encourage them to wipe down their keyboards, phones, and desks and workstations frequently. This will keep germs away and help discourage the spread of disease.
  • Provide hand sanitizer. Think of how many times you sneeze, cough, rub your eyes, or the many other things you do that infects your hands. Buy hand sanitizer in bulk and leave it out for employees to use. This will also help keep germs at bay and improve employee health.
  • Be a good example. It will be easier for your employees to make healthy lifestyle changes if they see their managers and owners of the company leading by example. Organize a route for the employees to walk on their lunches, and go with them. When providing lunches for the company, make healthy choices instead of things like burgers or pizza. Being a good example will help motivate others to live healthy as well.
  • Keep healthy food choices around. An office job often results in a lot of mindless snacking. This type of snacking can lead to weight gain, which can lead to further problems. Stocking the office with healthy snack foods instead of things like candy, sugary soda, and junk foods is a simple change you can make to improve employee health. Foods like apples, vegetables, almonds and other healthy nuts, granola or fiber bars, and water or V8 are better options for your employees. You don't have to get rid of the sweets altogether, but limit them instead.
  • Encourage activity. Physical activity is important, especially when you are working in an office all day. Encourage employees to get up and take walks outside, stretch, or get some physical activity throughout the day. Consider setting up teams for office sports. Go to a nearby park and play volleyball, or softball, or soccer. This is a fun way to get physical activity that employees will enjoy, and it's simple to set up.
  • Have competitions. Everyone loves a little friendly competition. Set up an in-office competition, like the Biggest Loser, or a competition to see who logs the most minutes exercising. Then have a prize ceremony at the end of the specified time. This is a fun and simple way to improve employee health.

Improving the health of your employees need not be difficult or expensive. These are a few simple changes you can make in the office to improve employee health.
