Dealing with emotional stress at work
How can you deal with emotional stress at work? The best thing you can do is take a break. Take some time off and go on a vacation. You need to get away from everything that is causing the negative emotions. If you can't afford to go on a vacation, go to a movie. Go hit softballs or race go-karts, do something to take your mind off the problems. Employers can help by offering gym passes or offering exercise classes at work. Yoga during the middle of a busy work week can really calm your nerves and it's a great way to get your mind off of everything that is troubling you. Yoga is designed to put your mind into a mediation state. You are taught to only focus on the stretches and the music. During this time, your concentration is entirely on the class so you do not have time to think about everything else that is troubling you. This helps some people get that clean slate they need in order to focus on their workday again. Proper breathing can also calm down your nerves. If your employer doesn't offer exercise classes, take a few minutes at your desk to practice deep breathing. Get a relaxing CD and do not allow anything to distract you for at least 5 minutes. During this time, breathe in through your nose for 10 seconds, hold the breath for 5 seconds and release it through your mouth. Repeat this for about 5 minutes. Studies have shown that deep breathing helps to calm the nervous system, which can help you focus on your work and forget about all the things that are troubling you. Another way to deal with emotional stress at work is to pick up an after-work hobby. Sign up for a gym membership and start going to exercise classes everyday. Exercise is the best way to reduce tension and stress. Even having a simple activity like cross-stitching can reduce built up emotional stress. You can bring simple things like cross word puzzles to work and do them during breaks or during your lunch hour. Whatever the hobby may be, make sure you do it daily. If you cannot deal with the stress, speak to your boss. You may need to ask them for a leave of absence. Some employers may even offer on-site counseling. A counselor can help you get to the root of your emotional problems and work through them. They can help you find the escape you need from emotional stress so you can start living again. They will help you either learn how to live with it or will teach you how to eliminate it altogether. For some people, a counselor may need to prescribe medication to help them deal with their stress. There are several good prescription drugs available that can help calm your nerves and keep your body regulated and help you deal with your emotional problems. If you do not deal with your emotional stress, it could start to lead to health problems like high blood pressure, weight loss, and even migraines.
