People that have low blood glucose often have a condition known as Hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia occurs if the glucose (blood sugar) levels drop below normal. Glucose is essential for the body because it converts into energy. Hypoglycemia is dangerous for people that are unaware that they have it. One minute, they can be completely fine and suddenly their glucose level drops and they are experiencing dizziness, fatigue, sweating, shakiness, confusion, weakness, anxiety, nervousness, hunger, and difficulty speaking. Some people can even lose consciousness because their glucose level dropped too low.

Employers that have employees with low blood glucose need to be aware of this. They need to have some foods ready in case that employee experiences a sudden drop of low blood glucose. Hypoglycemia can be treated quickly by drinking or eating something that is full of glucose. A candy bar, a regular soda, or 4 lifesavers can restore someone's glucose level back to normal. Individuals that have hypoglycemia should always carry some foods with them that can stabilize their blood glucose if it suddenly drops.

If hypoglycemia is left untreated, it can cause severe problems for that individual. It can worsen from sweating, hunger, and weakness to clumsiness, fainting, or confusion. If someone has severe hypoglycemia, they can have seizures, comas, and can even die from low blood glucose. Hypoglycemia often occurs during the nighttime for some people. It will cause them to waken with nightmare, night sweats, or confused and irritable.

People that have been diagnosed with Hypoglycemia need to carry around a blood glucose monitor. They should never skip meals as this can cause a dip in their blood glucose.

In order to prevent hypoglycemia from occurring during business hours, employers need to make sure their employees are consuming a diet high in protein. They also need to encourage their employees to get plenty of physical exercise. People with hypoglycemia can exercise and then have problems 24 hours later so it is important to follow a strict diet if you have hypoglycemia. Exercise can help to stabilize your blood sugar levels and it can prevent a dip in glucose.

Eating healthy snacks throughout the day can increase your blood sugar levels. Instead of having a sudden dip in your blood glucose, it will remain stable throughout the day. Hypoglycemia is extremely dangerous if it occurs when a person is driving. People that have hypoglycemia may have trouble concentrating when they are behind the wheel. They may not be able to see things as clearly when they are driving and they may not be able to react as quickly as normal people to dangerous road hazards. In order to prevent hypoglycemia when driving, you should always keep snacks in the car and eat one the second you get behind the wheel. This will help to keep your blood sugar above 70 mg/dL when you are behind the wheel. If you start experiencing symptoms of hypoglycemia while you are driving, pull over and park the car. Quickly consume foods that will increase your blood sugar and lay down until the symptoms stop.

Employers can help their employees with low blood glucose by promoting a healthy workplace. Instead of serving unhealthy food selections, offer foods high in protein and healthy sugars that will stabilize their blood glucose levels. Don't offer doughnuts at staff meetings, offer healthy choices of whole-grain breads and fresh fruits. If employees eat right and exercise right, they will be able to control their hypoglycemia.

Talk to your employees about purchasing diabetic drinks that help to stabilize low blood sugar levels. Even drinking 8 oz of milk can stabilize low glucose levels. It may be a good idea to offer milk to your employees each morning if you know they have hypoglycemia.
