High blood pressure is called the "silent killer" because most people do not know they have it until it is too late. High blood pressure happens from improper diet habits. If you consume a lot of salty foods, smoke, and you do not get daily exercise, you probably have high blood pressure. Normal blood pressure is 120/80. This reading is based off your systolic and diastolic blood pressure rating.

High blood pressure can be prevented, and it can be controlled. The easiest way to control it is to change your lifestyle. If you have extra weight, it's time to get rid of it. Losing 10 pounds will start to drop your blood pressure. Start exercising each day to reduce your blood pressure. You need to get in at least 30 minutes of daily exercise in order to reduce your blood pressure and increase your health.

Take a good look at the foods you eat. Do you eat a lot of salty snacks? Try to limit your sodium intake and start eating more fruits and vegetables. Consuming more fruits and vegetables can also help to reduce your risk of cancer. High blood pressure is also linked to stress. If your job is causing you to be under a great deal of stress, you need to think about giving up some of your responsibilities or you may need to quit your job and find one that isn't as stressful.

Smoking or being exposed to secondhand smoke will increase your risk of high blood pressure. Try to stay away from tobacco products in general if you want to reduce your high blood pressure. You also need to limit your intake of alcohol. Drinking too much alcohol will increase your blood pressure and it also increases your risk of cancer.

With so many health problems being tied to controllable factors, it is easy for employers to take steps toward preventing serious health problems from occurring. Several employers have started fitness programs at their offices. All the employees are required to participate in the fitness program. They each need to select a goal like "lower my blood pressure", "lose weight", "quit smoking." Once everyone has a goal set, they have a set number of weeks to obtain that goal. The person that obtains their goal will get a prize.

Several employers use the fitness programs to reward multiple employees. They will offer them incentives based on their accomplishments as a team. This means you will be rewarding 10 or more employees (based on how many you have) a large incentive. Cash incentives work well, as do prizes that are attractive like a free gym membership or a day off work.

Employers can help to prevent high blood pressure by holding regular health check-ups for their employees. Consult your health insurance company and speak to them about sending a medical team to your office to perform examinations of your employees. You can even pay them to bring immunizations with them and require your employees to update their shot records. If you can get your employees immunized, you will prevent the spread of infectious diseases in the office. Employees that are immunized are not as vulnerable to health conditions that may require them to take time off work. Having routine health checks can keep your employees healthier and prevent them from other major medical problems.

Hold regular meetings with your employees to discuss their health. Talk to your employees about the increase in high blood pressure, obesity, and other dangerous things. Let them know what they can do to prevent high blood pressure and other health problems.
