How a wellness program improves health

Wellness programs do more than help people quit smoking and lose weight. They are designed to build a healthy workplace for everyone. Every employer knows the importance of a healthy staff and how they can make your company productive. If you can keep your staff healthy, you won't need to worry about lost production costs and sick leave. How can a wellness program improve health? Here are some tips that may help:

Tip # 1 - Exercise
Perhaps the most important part of a wellness program is getting your employees to exercise. A good wellness program will provide employees with time to exercise and facilities to use. If you can't afford to pay for gym memberships, set aside a spare room in the office that can be used as an exercise room. Purchase a treadmill, an elliptical machine, and some other exercise tools for employees to use. Encourage your staff members to use the exercise room during breaks, lunchtime, or even before or after work. When employees exercise, they are more alert, more productive, healthier, and happier. This really helps people that may be suffering from a mental illness like depression.

If your employees exercise each day for at least 30 minutes, they are less-likely to get sick with the flu and common colds. Their immune systems are stronger and they are able to cope with stress and other situations easier.

Tip # 2 - Goodbye to Junk Food
Energy drinks and sugary sodas only provide temporary highs. Eventually employees will crash and they will need another energy boost. Instead of stocking the vending machines with foods that provide temporary highs, look for foods that maintain their metabolism and provide them with increased stamina.

The foods that are in the junk machine often are the reason why your employees have spare tires around their midsections. Sugary sodas and treats go straight to the gut and increase the risk of heart disease and cancer. If you replace the foods with healthier snacks like apple chips, rice cakes, vegetables, and meat snacks, your employees may start to lose some weight and they will feel better. Eating right also helps to improve your energy levels and memory capabilities.

While you cannot control all the food your employees eat, you can at least take away the temptation for many of them. At staff meeting, bring in some meat and cheese trays over pizza. Offer some fresh fruits and vegetables over doughnuts and bagels. Do small things to start to encourage your employees to eat better and improve their health.

Tip # 3 - Reduce Germs
If one person is sick, they are likely to spread their illness to the entire office. Give your employees the option to work from home (if possible). Discourage sick employees from coming into the office because they will spread their cold to other people and before you know it; your entire marketing team is at home battling a nasty head cold. There are some employees that still refuse to go home when they are sick. For these employees, request that they wear a mask and sanitize their hands often. You should also let your other employees know this person isn't feeling well so they can wear masks when they are around them and they can wash their hands or use sanitizer after they have been around them.

Everyone knows that germs spread quickly, which is why it is vital to your health to wash your hands often. Bring some antibacterial hands wipes and wash the doorknobs, phones, keyboards, mice, desks, and other areas that are commonly touched. If you can reduce the germs in your office, you may be able to reduce the spread of head colds and infectious diseases.
