Healthy employees are more productive, are happier, and will help a good company be better. Employers need healthy employees. There are several ways to help employees be healthy. One of the best ways that an employer can help their employees be healthy is by beginning an office wellness program for the employees to participate in. A wellness program is an easy and great way to help employees be healthy.

Where to begin

There are many different types of wellness programs. There are programs that may focus specifically on exercise, or nutrition. There are wellness programs that help employees deal with stress. Some wellness programs encompass all of these areas. When an employer wants to begin a wellness program for their company they should think about their employee dynamic. What do they need to focus on to make them healthier? Is it their weight? Their stress load? Their healthcare costs because of unhealthy lifestyle practices? After figuring out what the group of employees needs to work on, the employer will know where to start. It can be quite a tasks getting a wellness program going, but if the employer decides what order things need to be worked on, it can make having a wellness program fun as well as very helpful to the company.

Hire out

There are many students graduating at university all over the country who have gone into Health Promotions, Human Performance, Nutrition, Dietetics, and/or Physical Fitness who are prepared with the knowledge needed to help employees be health. These students have been taught how to help people to have a better lifestyle and be healthy. There are other people who have been in the business for awhile who are also very prepared to take on an office full of unhealthy employees to help them improve their health.

The people working for the wellness program will provide each individual employee with excellent care. They will perform tests to find out their blood glucose, triglycerides, and their body mass composition. These tests are very important so that each employee can be evaluated and a healthy lifestyle plan can be tailored to fit their needs.

Each employee will get to talk to the wellness employee who will help them find ways to incorporate an exercise routine in their life, to make healthy food choice (both at home and at restaurants), and to live a healthy life. Many of the wellness programs will also provide help to employees who need quit smoking. These programs may also take time to help employees deal with their stressors whether work related or otherwise.

Do it yourself

If the employer does not have the money just yet to hire out for a wellness program, there are things that they can do on their own to begin their own wellness program. There could be an office challenge to lose weight. A reward could be given to the top few employees who lose the most amount of weight in a certain amount of time, or who reach their goal weight. The employer could also put together an office sports team, such as basketball, softball, or soccer. This can encourage employees to get together and engage in physical activity together. Another idea is for the employer to assign nutrition or physical activity topics to groups of employees. The employer will ask the group of employees to research the topic to share with the rest of the company. Each week a group of employees could present on the research they have done and what they have discovered. This will only take a little time out of the day and could be very useful to the employees.
