Low-Carbohydrate Diets: What you can eat

For any diet you can really choose to eat whatever you want to since you have the power to control yourself. But, if you choose to follow the suggested route, well then, that is different.

If you followed the suggested route there is a plan laid out for you to follow and hopefully you will be able to follow it. If not, that stinks and it will probably be worse for your body to go through a weird change all of a sudden and then back to normal than it would for you body to just keep eating how you have always been eating.

Every diet focuses mainly on how much or how little to eat out of the main food groups. Should you eat a lot of dairy? Should you eat a lot of meat? Should you eat a lot of fruits and vegetables? Should you eat a lot of grains? Or should you just balance them all and use moderation in every area?

In low-carb diets the simple answer to what you can eat is any food with low-carbs and controlled amounts of the rest of the food you eat that doesn't have low carbs.

So as long as you are eating something that has low carbs, and has some nutritional value, then you should be alright. But with foods like fruits and vegetables, you need to control the amounts because of all the carbs.

The main food that people talk about when they are speaking of low-carb diets is meat. Lots of meat is supposed to be really good for you. Not unlimited meat. No, that would be bad.

You are supposed to have lots of meat. Lots of meat would be good because of its protein as well as the fact that you are not eating carbohydrates and so your body will not produce insulin and it will burn fat.

Opposite of most diets, low-carb diets consist of lots of meat and not as much fresh foods like fruits and vegetables. Always in the past fruits, vegetables and grains were the main bulge of a diet. They were considered what would make your body healthy and strong.

That is why it was such a big deal when Dr. Atkins came out with his Atkins Diet. People were a little bit cautious in thinking that it could really be good for you. With such reduced intake of the fresh foods and grains, could it really be healthy, they wondered. But, it was a big boom for awhile.

It is important to understand though that low-carb diets are not ALL meat and a few vegetables, fruits and grains. You eat a lot of meat and not as much vegetables, fruits and grains as you have in the past.

Since it is low-carb it seems that vegetables, fruits and grains would be discouraged. But instead of discouraging them, they discourage too much of them.

They advise you that when you do eat carbohydrates (it is a low carb diet, not a no carb diet) to replace things like baked goods and processed foods with fruits, vegetables and grains.

This way you still get the nutrients from the fresh stuff, but not as much carbohydrates as you have been in the past. Even this though is debated by doctors and said that it could cause bad health problems in the future.

So basically on a low-carb diet you eat things with low-carbs. It is really quite simple. You eat things like meat and cheese and stuff and then more controlled amounts of fruits and vegetables and grains. You are not supposed to eat a lot of starches.
