When people hear the term wellness program the first thing that they think about is health care programs. The main reason behind that is because most wellness programs are intended to help your place of business reduce their health care costs. However, wellness programs also do more than just save your company money in health care costs. Wellness programs are also intended to help people become more comfortable with them as a whole because they focus on the entire person rather than just on their health care needs. In today's workforce companies are not just hiring a certain type of person. Most businesses are now hiring the person who best fits the job description that they are looking for. As a direct result of this type of hiring practice the workplace is becoming more diverse. People have to work with other people who are not always the same as them; you can find different age groups, different races and ethnicities, different religions, different genders, and different sexual orientation.

Substance abuse is a problem that more people have to deal with each day; more and more people are becoming affected by substance abuse either through their own personal use or a family member's abuse. Offering a wellness program in substance abuse will allow your worker's to learn to recognize the signs of substance abuse and learn how to handle substance abuse in the workplace, meaning what their rights and responsibilities are in regards to substance abuse. This wellness program should also offer referrals to where people can go to get help for themselves or their loved ones.
Number three: Preventing Violence in the Workplace
Violence in the workplace does not have to be physical violence. The wellness programs that are offered that cover violence in the workplace also talk about harassment in the workplace, which can include bullying or sexual harassment. The programs that are offered for preventing violence in the workplace teach your employees what they can do to deal with violence in the workplace, such as ways to prevent the situations, but they also teach the employees about what to do if they are witnessing a situation that involves violence in the workplace. The wellness programs cover what options employees have when it comes to violence in the workplace, but it also talks about how much organizational conflict can end up costing a company.
Number four: Safety in the Workplace
Safety in the workplace is a big part of the wellness programs that are being offered because if you are safe in the workplace you can save your company a lot of money. Offering wellness programs can help reduce the number of on the job injuries, but it also helps t lower the number of claims for workers' compensation. This is done by teaching your employees about how to be safe on the job, including back safety.
