Not everybody who wants to quit smoking can just quit cold turkey. In fact, majority of smokers are going to need some type of help to quit smoking because of how addicting smoking is. One method that you can use to help you quit smoking is medication; there are several forms of medication that you can use to quit smoking that has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

Here are some medications that you or your employees can use to quit smoking.

Number one: Nicotine Replacement Therapy or NRT
Nicotine replacement therapy is a medication that can be used to assist you in quitting smoking because it has a low dose of nicotine in it. This low dose of nicotine that is contained in this medication is pure nicotine, which means that it does not include all of the other harmful things that nicotine in tobacco has, so you will not be subjected to the side effects from those other ingredients. The main purpose of this type of medication is to help people who are quitting relieving their withdrawal symptoms by giving them low doses of the nicotine, which is not as addictive as tobacco. This type of medication is available for anybody to buy over the counter and comes in the form of a pill, a patch or even chewing gum. You can also obtain a prescription from your doctor for this type of medication that comes in the form of an inhaler or nasal spray.

Number two: Bupropion SR or Zyban
Bupropion SR is prescribed under the brand name of Zyban. This drug is not a nicotine based drug, in fact it is nicotine free. This drug is a prescription drug that is an antidepressant. People who are trying to quit smoking can be prescribed Zyban so that they can help reduce their withdrawal symptoms. However, even though this drug has been approved by the FDA to treat both depression and tobacco cessation not all insurance companies will allow it. If you plan on using Zyban to help relieve your withdrawal symptoms while you are quitting smoking you will want to check with your insurance company to see if they will allow it to be covered for smoking cessation.

Number three: Varenicline or Chantix
Varenicline is a medication that is prescribed by doctors to help people quit smoking. This medication like Zyban is a nicotine free medication that can be used by people to help them quit smoking. Chantix works in two different ways to help you quit smoking. The first thing that the pill does is provide you with some of the nicotine effects without providing you with the nicotine, which is designed to help you ease the withdrawal symptoms. The second way it works is that the pill blocks the effects of nicotine from cigarettes, which is helpful for people who are trying to quit but end up resuming smoking. Another good thing about this medication is that even though the treatment period is only for 12 weeks, that period can be doubled. This is nice for people who have successfully quit smoking because it allows them to use the medication for another 12 weeks to ensure that do not smoke, which increases their chances of remaining smoke free.

If you think that you need medication to help you quit smoking be sure to talk to your doctor about what is available. This will allow you and your doctor to decide on the right treatment options because not all medications will work the same for everybody. Using the right medication will also increase your chances of becoming smoke free.
