Scratching, what to do if your cat has a problem

carpet65281728.jpgCats scratch for a number of reasons, and while it is normal, it doesn't mean you want them scratching you, your kids, or your furniture. The following is a look at some of the things you can do if your cat is scratching.

1. Give them something to scratch. Cats love to scratch. It helps them remove claw chips, get out some energy, play, and in some cases is a way of marking territory. So, do not try to get them to stop scratching all together, as this would go against their nature. Instead, give them something that they are allowed to scratch. For example, a scratching post will help them get the need out without ruining your furniture. Give them different kinds of posts, so that they have lots of options for scratching material. Also, to make sure your cat knows it is there, and that it is for them, consider rubbing some of their food up and down the post to attract them to it.

2. Even if you give your cat something to scratch, they might keep scratching the wrong things as well. So, another option is to take them in to the vet, or go to the pet store and buy nail caps. They are little vinyl sleeves that will protect their claws from doing damage when they scratch.

3. Get your cat declawed. Many people do not want to do something so invasive to the cat. Declawing the cat in essence means amputating the last joint of the claw bones, as the claws grow from the bones. So, while this is an option, trainingyour cat to scratch the right things is usually a better option.

4. Get their nails trimmed. This is fairly easy, and does not require you to take them to the vet. You can have your vet teach you how to do it the first time, and then take over from there. Or, you can go online and find some tips for how to trim cat claws.

5. Talk to your vet about it. If your cat has not been a scratcher before, and starts to scratch, become aggressive, etc. it may indicate a health problem. Cats have no way to let you know that something is wrong besides their behavior, so changes in it could mean they are suffering. It might be something simple, or something more intense, but rule out such options before getting rid of your cat for scratching.

A cat is one of the easiest pets to own, as they require less one on one time, exercise, clean up, etc. then most other pets, but you should not get a cat lightly. A cat still requires care, effort, and some expense. If your cat is scratching, it may take some time and expense to sort out their behavior, and fix it.
