Secrets to make your wellness program successful

mansayingbequiet10038816.jpgA successful wellness program is made by your employees. You can do everything in your power to implement it, but it is up to your employees to actually spend the time participating in the program and make it a success. Employees can accomplish big things if they participate in a wellness program. Some companies have reported that their employees have lost over 50 pounds per person! This is a huge achievement for anyone, especially for an entire company.

There are various benefits to wellness programs including the following:

  • Boost in employee morale

  • Reduced healthcare costs

  • Reduced sick leave costs

  • Increased employee productivity

So what can you do to make your wellness program successful? There are several things you can try; here are a few that may help your company:

Focus on the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. Obesity is on the rise and is on top of almost every employers cost list. Employees that are not living healthy lifestyles are at an increased risk of developing high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, sleep apnea, and other medical problems. Many people that work in office struggle with mental health problems. This is because they are stuck behind a desk for 8 or more hours a day and they are unable to get the sunlight they need to rejuvenate their bodies. Make sure your employees spend some time outside each day for at least 5 minutes. The sunlight gives out bodies the Vitamin D we need to feel happy and to keep the body healthy. Start taking your staff meetings outside for a few minutes before you jump into some big details. This is a simple way to encourage healthier living in your office.

Spend time exercising in the office. You don't have to sweat to have a good workout. Encourage your employees to get off their rears and into the gym. Offer gym memberships for a discounted rate or try giving them out for free. Do whatever you can to encourage exercise in the office. A great way to do this is to start giving your employees an extra 20-30 minutes a day just for exercise. Companies like Nike encourage exercise during business hours and they have found that their employees are much happier with their jobs and they are in shape. Offer an afternoon exercise class like Pilates or yoga. Take a group of employees outside and go for a hike or a relaxing walk in the middle of the afternoon. Another way to encourage exercise during work hours is to replace chairs with exercise balls. Offer to replace desks with treadmill desks. Both options are a great way for employees to get some much-needed exercise during business hours.

Stop offering foods that are unhealthy. Instead of selling candy bars and soda in your company vending machines, start selling bottled water, juice, and granola bars. Your employees deserve to have healthier eating choices and many of them will eat whatever is in front of them. If you provide them with fruits and vegetables over candy and salty snacks, you will be able to help your employees lose weight.

Have celebrations to reward your employees that have participated in the wellness program. Make sure these employees know how much you appreciate their hard work and that they know to continue working hard to reach their goals. Be careful about the food you serve at the celebration, you definitely don't want to serve unhealthy foods because this completely negates the purpose of the wellness program. Offer salads or sandwiches instead and make sure to include vegetable trays and fruit platters!
