Avoiding buyer's remorse

stressedwoman16009389.jpgAt one point or another, you have most likely suffered from buyer's remorse. Buyer's remorse doesn't just happen when you spend a lot of money on a single item, it can even happen when you spend a few bucks on a small item. Buyer's remorse happens because you feel guilty about the purchase you have made because you really didn't need it or because it was, something that you later determined was a complete waste of money.

Here are some steps that you can follow so you can start avoiding buyer's remorse.

Step one
:
If you are considering buying something, no matter what it is, it can be a big or small item; you will want to make sure that you do some shopping around for different prices. This is especially important for big-ticket items because you can often find it on sale or even offered for a lower price at another place. When shopping around you can do it online, this will save you time and money because you won't be driving around to every store. You can even look online to see if you can get it for a better price.

Step two:
When you are looking at an item and are seriously considering buying it you want to ask yourself some basic questions. When asking yourself some questions you want to make sure that you remain objective, if you don't you might not make the right choice and will end up suffering from buyer's remorse. You want to ask yourself stuff like can you afford to spend money on the item, do you really need it. Will you want it even after the newness has worn off, etc.

Step three:
Once you have made the decision to buy the item you still don't want to buy it, buying it as soon as you decide to buy it is called impulse buying. Instead, what you want to do is think about the purchase. If it is something that is relatively inexpensive talk a long walk around the shopping center and think about your purchase, think about what you will use it for and how often you will use it. If it is a large item, you will want to go home and at least sleep on it, at home think about how much use you will get out of the item. You want to weight the advantages and disadvantages of the item before you buy it so that you can make an educated decision.

Step four:

Depending on the item that you are buying, you will also want to do some research on the product. Do not just review the website of the company that is selling the product, you will want to look at various other websites to find out what other people are saying about the product. You can look over consumer reviews, but you should also see if you can find any testimonials about the product. The more you know about the product the better your decision will be because you will not be caught unaware.

Step five:
If you still want to purchase the item after you have thought about it you can go back to the store or the website and make the purchase. Many times though you will find that the newness of the item or the appeal of the item has faded and you don't want it after all.

Step six:
Check out the return policy for the item that you are purchasing, find out how long you have to return it just in case you decide to change your mind after you have purchased it. You also need to look into any extended warranties because you never know when you might need it. For example, two years after buying an item and two months after the originally warranty expired the item breaks, no extended warranty means you just lost out on all that money.
