Lowering labor costs

There are so many parts of a business that are so expensive, and labor is just one of them.Sometimes you feel like your business will never get anywhere because all of the money that comes in seems to be going to pay your employees.

You need to get ahead, and the only way you are going to do that is if you can lower your labor costs each month. Now, it sounds good to just fire all of the employees, and then you don't owe them anything. But that is not the best business decision you can make.

There is also the chance that you could just layoff some of them, that way there would still be some employees to pay but not as many. But this idea isn't the greatest either. There are much better ways to go about lowering your labor costs.

Here are a few ideas that should help you to efficiently lower the amount you are paying for labor without any big firing sprees.

  • It all starts with having the right amount of employees. This number will change when business changes, but you need to have the right number of employees to staff your business. If you decide to cut employees to save money then you are going to be paying others overtime, now get out your calculator. It is cheaper to pay an extra employee regular wages than it is to pay one or two employees overtime to cover their time.Be fully staffed, just know how many you need.
  • Try to hire long term employees. This means find someone that you feel like you will have for a long time.If you have a high turnover that is going to cost you.Training an employee takes lots of money, there are the training hours that they are getting paid plus the hours that the trainer is getting paid when they could be doing something else.So if you can keep employees then you labor costs will be lower because you are not paying for training lots of employees.
  • Make sure that you are treating your employees well. They are going to reflect your attitude in their work. This means that if you are always telling them how bad they are doing and what they are doing wrong then that is what is going to get accentuated. On the other hand, if you are complimenting them and letting them know how much you appreciate them then they are going to reflect the positive attitude.Never underestimate the power of positive.
  • Make sure that you are rewarding accomplishments in your employees. This means having incentives to get things done. With this system in place they will be pushing harder and being more productive with their time.If they have a reason to be doing extra work then you will get that extra work out of them. The rewards don't even have to cost anything, give them an extra break for every $500 they sell, or let them go home first if they are the first one to sell your new item. This doesn't hurt your budget and it gives them something to look forward to.
  • Make sure that you and your employees never stop learning. This means that you are constantly striving to make yourselves better and do your job better. This could be books to read, computer learning modules that are set up, or employee meetings.Help them to want to do better by watching you get better everyday. There is nothing that can match the magic of a smile.
