Avoiding motion sickness when driving

There are many people that cannot go on long-distance vacations because they have motion sickness. If you avoid a lot of vacations and many other things because of motion sickness, there are some things you can do to limit your sickness or hopefully avoid it altogether. Here are some ways in which you can avoid motion sickness when driving:

  • Open the window - the fresh air can often make you feel better. It's a great idea to try when you are driving so you don't end up focusing on the nausea and sick feeling you may have. If it's winter, lean closer to the window so you can get small amounts of fresh air as it always leaks into the window seal a little bit in every car. Make sure you have plenty of fresh air as other things such as smoke in the car along with perfume can make you feel sick.
  • Take breaks when driving - if you start feeling nauseous, ask another person in the car to drive for awhile. This will allow you to get out of the car and to stretch your legs for a little bit and get some fresh air. Taking a break will reduce eye strain, which can often leave you feeling nauseous as well.
  • Keep certain foods with you that will aid in preventing motion sickness when driving. Some of these foods include ginger root which is found in ginger biscuits along with ginger ale and candies. Ginger really does help to prevent nausea and it can make you feel much better when you are driving. If you aren't a fan of ginger, try some peppermint candies along with fresh mint as they both provide the same benefits of preventing nausea.
  • Keep your mind of the nausea and motion sickness feeling by listening to music or chatting with others in the car. When you are focusing on other things besides the feeling of sickness, it makes the drive much easier and you are less likely to fell ill.
  • Try using acupressure. Press gently between the 2 tendons that are back from your wrist joint. Many people find that this helps to relieve the feeling and it also helps them to feel energetic. You can purchase a wrist band which will do the same thing for you and can help with the nausea.
  • Use motion sickness medications. There are several medications in the store that you can purchase as they will help to eliminate the sick feeling. These often include ginger root in them. If the pills do not work you may need to ask your doctor about prescription medications to help with motion sickness so you can start feeling better again. Sometimes motion sickness when driving is actually caused from illness as your ears may have excess fluid and this is causing your balance and coordination to be off a little bit.
  • Some folk remedies to try out include eating a dill pickle on the trip and to also try smelling newspaper. For many people these folk remedies actually work quite well.

Motion sickness can be annoying to many people but with the right prevention tips you can easily avoid it and start feeling much better. Typically the reason why motion sickness occurs is because your body's senses are conflicted with the fact that you are moving, but your body isn't actually moving. This causes the body to become disoriented and makes you feel ill.

It always helps to look out the window when you can and to focus on other things besides the feeling you have. When you look out the window you can balance your body's system and to prevent the feeling of disorientation.
