Smoking Regulations In The Workplace

boutique_1142859.jpg
Smoking regulations in the workplace should strive for a complete ban from the private property that the business owns. There is no question that smoking is bad for the health of everyone, but smoking is more than bad for an individual's health, it is bad for everyone who is around that individual and for the people who have to clean up after the individual. The only company that smoking is good for is one that is involved in the tobacco industry.

Smoking is the single leading cause of heart disease and lung cancer. It contributes to strokes and emphysema. It is so bad that the Surgeon General has said that no amount of exposure to cigarette smoke is safe. The evidence of how bad cigarettes and tobacco are for people's health is piled so high and so well known that it is amazing that anyone would subject themselves to the stink and yellow teeth alone - much less the reduced lung capacity and the possibility of various cancers not limited to the lungs.Parents who smoke in the home are more likely to have children who die from SIDS and who have a multitude of ear infections.
Not only are the dangers of smoking and second hand smoke well documented, but it is also coming to light that the residue left from smoking is also a health hazard to those who come in contact with it.This residue can be found on smoker's clothing, on the walls in homes where people smoke and on cigarette butts.
Any business that adopts a no tobacco policy is not only looking out for the health of its workers, it is also looking out for its bottom line.Smokers tend to get sick more often than nonsmokers and cost companies billions every year in sick time taken and opportunity costs as they are not only not at work but they are also making someone else do double duty.Aside from these inconveniences, some insurance companies will give discounts on health insurance premiums to those companies that do not allow tobacco on their property.Companies that think that banning tobacco from the workplace is too extreme should look at hospitals and schools where tobacco has been banned.Asthmatics no longer have to worry about smoke, which is the number one trigger of asthma attacks, when they are on a smoke-free property.Smoking is not a right. It is not guaranteed by the Constitution, and on company properties, the company has the final say on whether or not it is allowed.
Companies that are concerned that they would lose a large part of the workforce should create an outside zone away from the intake vents and doors where smokers are allowed to smoke. For the safety and comfort of those who work and for customers, it is important that smoking is never tolerated inside the building. When smoke gets into the air ducts, it gets dispersed throughout the building and can create asthma attacks and other health problems.
Comprehensive smoking regulations in the workplace should be well known and well enforced. The best case scenario is that smoking and all tobacco products are not tolerated anywhere on the work property. Not only does this help protect the business from lawsuits related to asthma attacks and other diseases that may be triggered by smoke, it also helps keep the company's workforce healthy and helps keep them at work where they can do their jobs and keep the profits rolling in.the only down side is the company may lose a competent worker to the ban, but in the long run, it will be for the best.
