Safety Regulations In The Workplace

Safety regulations in the workplace are there for several reasons. They protect the health of individuals, they protect the integrity of the company and its industry, and they create a safe working environment that allows people to work at their highest capacity for a longer period of time.

Regardless of what the term "human resource" may imply, people are the most important part of every business.Without them, the business could not do its work even with a highly automated business.Until the robots are capable of taking over and intelligent thought, people will always be the greatest resource for every company.Because companies in the past failed to see that as the truth of what the company was about, the government had to enact regulations that prevented companies from taken people, using them until they broke and hiring new people.By protecting individuals, the government helped business to realize better profits.Less money was spent on retraining individuals to do jobs, more innovations were able to come from people who were able to reach three-sigma thinking and health care was protected from overuse by those who were left as detritus by the company that they used to work for.
In the age of the internet, anything that a company does wrong will be known within seconds and disseminated out faster than the speed of thought.Safety regulations protect companies in two ways - as long as they follow them, employees are relatively well protected from injury and illness, and when they do not protect the employee, the business can point to the lack of safety regulations as the culprit. It is hard to find the kind of protection that protects and provides a scapegoat that the public accepts even when common sense is violated, a company can use safety regulations as an excuse for not enacting more strenuous by saying that they had followed all of the laws, and since this applies to all of the companies, the industry is also protected.
Another benefit that the companies realize from safety regulations when they are followed correctly is that people are able to work longer and safer. After "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair created such an uproar regarding the meat packing industry, the government enacted safety regulations that helped to make the meat packing industry one of the safest and most highly regarded industries in the United States. When the meat packing industry changed and the safety regulations no longer applied, it again has become one of the most dangerous industries to work in.
Safety regulations should not be ignored by individuals who believe they are macho, by managers who are trying to save money or by corporations that are looking to increase the short term bottom line.No one is above getting repetitive stress disorders or being involved in freak accidents. That is why safety equipment like ear plugs and steel-toed shoes are so important.Hard hats provide both head protection and visibility.
Managers, even at the behest of upper management, should resist the urge to undercut the effectiveness of safety regulations either through word or deed.Safety should always be the number one concern of everyone in a company.By keeping the right equipment on hand for anyone that may need it and by following the regulations themselves, managers can be the most effective examples of how important safety is.Upper management need only make sure that the money is available for the correct equipment, and they can ensure that everyone stays healthy and that workers' compensation doesn't have a need to intervene in anyone's life or business at any time.
