There are many things that can impact your health in a negative manner and bug bites are one of the things you have to watch out for. A single sting from a bee can put some people in the hospital but a bite from a spider of another insect can also send you to the ER. Many bugs have toxic substances they will release into your body when they bite you and this can make you incredibly ill. Sometimes the toxic substance that is released ends up destroying your body's white blood cells. When your white blood cells are attacked your body is unable to fight off infections.

What are the symptoms of bug bites?
Bug bites can happen in the summer or in the winter. If you are allergic to certain bug bites the reaction you will have includes inflammation along with redness, pain, and swelling. Itchiness and tenderness is quite common to deal with if you have been bitten by a bug. In some cases you can have anaphylaxis shock; this will cause you to head to the emergency room right away to save your life. Some bug bites will cause Lyme disease and other health concerns that are very serious and very dangerous. A black widow spider bite is one of the most dangerous ones as it causes intense pain, redness, swelling, and tenderness. Venom is one of the things that is very dangerous as it will increase blood pressure. In the United States one of the spider bites that has caused a lot of concern is the brown recluse spider bite. It leaves a very dangerous reaction as it begins with a red bulls-eye mark and then blistering. This bite is very toxic and has even killed people. If you notice the mark head to the hospital right away. The brown recluse bite often cannot be felt by a lot of people. It might happen in the night but for many people the brown recluse typically stays in your laundry where it is warm and they bite you when you are folding it or putting it away. Here are some other bug bites that you need to be concerned about:

  • Bed bugs

  • Scabies

  • Cockroaches

  • Chiggers

These bites don't always need hospitalization and they can be treated with antihistamines and ointments. If you experience a fever that lasts more than 24 hours from one of the bug bites you need to call your doctor and find out what else you need to do.

Treating bug bites
Bug bites will need to be treated in order to reduce the symptoms from getting worse. You need to start treatment by using an antihistamine. This will help with the itching redness, and swelling that occurs. Then you need to apply ice to the area where the bug bite occurred. It also helps to take aspirin and make a paste out of it with water and rub it on the bite. This reduces the pain. Take an ibuprofen to help with the pain that you may be experiencing. It is important to head to the ER right away if you do end up experiencing anaphylactic shock.

Preventing bug bites
One of the best ways to avoid the bug bites is to keep your home clean and focus on preventing them. You need to understand the types of bites and the various bugs that are in your area. Cleaning your home often and plugging up holes where they may be able to get into your home is a great way to prevent the bugs from getting inside. If you go to hotels, watch out for bed bugs as they commonly reside in hotels and can easily cause an infestation in your home. Bug bomb your home at least 1 time a year to keep spiders and other bugs out of the home.
