How do you get your employees to exercise?

Some of your employees will make time to exercise and to take good care of their bodies but there are also the employees out there that do not make exercise a priority in their lives and they don't take the time to care for their bodies in the right way.

At work employees may be sitting or standing for several hours at a time. They also deal with high amounts of stress which can lead to a number of issues. People with high amounts of stress have shorter lifespans, are less productive, and tend to take more time off work. So how does exercise help to reduce stress and promote an overall healthier workplace environment? Here is one place where you can learn a lesson from, Google. What has Google done to improve their employees health and reduce stress? They recognized that allotting time into the workday for stress-reducing things has increased their productivity and provided them with healthier employees. Nike is another company that has taken this dramatic step forward towards improving the health and wellness of their employees.

Here are some of the things that Google and Nike have both offered to their employees:

  • Flexible working times so employees have a chance to workout during their workday.

  • On-site fitness centers where they can exercise during work hours.

  • Exercise classes like yoga, spinning, swimming, etc.

  • Gym memberships

  • Video game systems that encourage you to move (Nintendo Wii systems)

Even if your company is not as big as Google and Nike, you can still find some great ways to offer wonderful benefits to your employees. One fun thing to try is to create a break-room for your employees where they have a place to go to relax. Include a Nintendo Wii as it does get the employees to exercise at work. You will see them in the breakroom playing games and even getting some of them to sweat. This is a great way to reduce tension and stress in the workplace and it will save you of paying for gym memberships and other things.

If you do have a spare room, another thing to consider is getting a few bicycles and some elliptical machines. This is a great way to get your employees to work out as you are providing them with an on-site facility. Exercise does make people better as it releases hormones and these hormones provide a feeling of well-being.

Employees that are in good health are less likely to get sick and less likely to call in and take time off. Employees that exercise also are at a lower risk for injury as their muscles are loose and stronger and they won't pull or strain their muscles as easily.

Talk to your employees about the benefits of exercise and find out if there are things you can do to get them to exercise and to promote healthier living. You'd be surprised to learn some of the things that they would like to try at the office to make it better for them and to promote exercise.

Start having outdoor meetings with your employees where you will be able to get them out and walking. Walking around the building for their employee evaluation is a great way to promote exercise in the office. This is also a great way to get some Vitamin D and to feel better as well. While you have alone time with the employee, be sure to talk to them about their lives and get to know them a little better. This will help you to form a tighter bond to you and to also promote greater employee retention as they feel more of an emotional connection to the company.
