It's Time To Diversify Your Workplace

What are you doing about discrimination in the workplace and how are you helping to deal with a workplace that is properly diversified? If you do not have control over the way in which you are helping to give your employees a healthy and safe working environment, you are failing your staff. Having a workplace that is tolerant and accepting of everyone is a great way to show that you have a company that people want to work for.

What does it mean to have an inclusive workplace? It is more than having a staff that comes with various backgrounds and having people that respect and appreciate each other, it is creating a company that is accepting and one where discrimination and judgment doesn't exist. You need to really work on making everyone feel welcome and to have a policy that clearly defines what type of things are acceptable and what things are not acceptable.

Policies need to be mandated and they need to be carried out by management. If you do not hold people accountable for the actions that are in clear violation of the company policies, you will not be able to have a company that is successful. You need to have your employees see that you are serious about these policies and have a zero tolerance policy for people that are discriminating against anyone else for any reason. When you have these policies in place and people can see that you are serious about them, they are less likely to take advantage.

What should be included in your policy? Here are some of the things that you need to add in order to have a company that is accepting of everyone else and makes the working environment into a safe and enjoyable place to be:
1. Strategic goals must include diversify. When it's part of the overall company goals to have a place that is diverse, it helps people to see that you are serious. They will know what is expected of them and they are able to see the importance of having a company that is fun to work for and one that doesn't discriminate against anyone. No matter what the issue may be (race, religion, gender, etc.) your staff all needs to know that everyone is equal in your workplace and everyone will get along.
2. Bullying is not permitted. This is something that you need to include as a lot of people do not see that bullying happens when it is not them. Be on the lookout for any type of bullying going on at your company. Always follow through with the right type of discipline in order to show your staff members that you will not tolerate any bullying and that you are determined to have a company that is safe and enjoyable.
3. Conflict identification. This is also huge as you need to see when people are angry and upset with one another. Identify the conflicts and get rid of them as soon as possible before they lead to problems such as violence.
4. Proper communication. Just about everything can be fixed when people actually sit down and talk to one another. You need to have a system in place that provides you with the right type of communication and to make sure people know what type of languages are absolutely not accepted with the company.
5. Keep documentation of everything. If the time ever comes that you need to dismiss an employee for their behavior you will thank yourself 10 fold for keeping documentation of all the different things that have happened and to make sure that you are able to provide these documents to a person that is not obeying the policies you have created.
