Staying well around sick people

blowingnose32355108.jpgDuring cold and flu season everybody is concerned about not getting sick because they don't want to miss work or they just don't like getting sick. No matter what the reasons are for not wanting to get sick there are a few things that you can do so that you can stay healthy even when everyone around is sick.

The first thing that you will need to do is make sure that you wash your hands several times a day. Washing your hands for 20 seconds with warm soapy water is the best way to kill any germs that are lurking on your hands. Killing the germs will lower your chances of getting sick because you are lowering the risk of picking up the viruses that are being spread around the workplace or your home. If you cannot wash your hands with soap and warm water, you can use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

If everybody inside your home is sick, you will want to make sure you wipe down any hard surfaces with a disinfectant, once a day. Disinfectant wipes are a great way to kill any germs that are lingering on the hard surfaces; most of them also kill the influenza viruses. You can use the disinfectant wipes in the workplace if you have sick co-workers. Wiping down key boards and phones is necessary to help prevent the spread of germs. If you are around kids during the day, either in your home or in a day care setting, you will want to clean the toys each day if there are sick kids or each week if nobody is sick.

Something else that you can do to help stay well when everybody else is sick is to make sure that you get plenty of rest. This doesn't mean that you need to go to bed early and wake up early to stay healthy, what it means is you need to get a good night's sleep so your body has a chance to recuperate from the day. When you are sleeping, your body is healing itself, which includes fighting off any viruses that are trying to attack your immune system. If you allow yourself to be worn down or become sleep deprived, your chances of fighting off an infection are greatly reduced.

Eating healthy is also important in staying well when others around you are sick. Eating healthy ensures that your body is getting the nutrients' it needs in order to keep your body running properly. Getting the right amount of nutrients can also help your body's natural defense system to help fight off those never-ending viruses that seem to be surrounding you. Exercise can also help you stay healthy because it keeps your body working properly and it keeps you physically fit. This is important in staying healthy, the more physically fit you are the healthier you will be. Eating healthy is more important than exercising, so make sure you eat right.

Staying inside during the cold winter months is not a good idea if you are trying to stay healthy, or even leaving your windows shut all winter long. To help stay healthy when people in your home are sick you need to air out the house on occasion, fresh air is needed to help stay healthy. During the winter months more people get sick because they stay cooped up in the house and never open the windows, so the germs have nowhere to go, but into your body. Opening windows on nice days helps to circulate the germs so you stay healthy. Using a humidifier can also help you stay healthy because it regulates the air moisture to help keep your sinuses moist.
