It can be both an exciting and challenging time when you realize that you need to hire employees for your small business. However, before you simply begin posting job descriptions there are certain things that you should consider. This is an important task that will play a large part in how your business succeeds. You need to take the time to plan out the hiring process so that you end up with the type of employee(s) that you are really wanting. This way you can say that your employees are truly your most valuable asset. Here is what you need to know about how to hire the right people for your small business-

- Decide what your small business really needs-It is important to take the time to determine exactly what your small business needs. Many small business owners report that after they have taken the time to consider this they often find that they need a totally different type of employee then what they first thought they did. You should also clearly decide what skill set you will want your new employee to have or whether you just need someone who is willing to be trained. It can be helpful to determine if there are tasks that are not getting done because you don't have the skills needed. This can often be an indicator of the type of employee that you are looking for. Remember, that hiring for a small business is often like putting a puzzle together. You want to find the missing pieces that will make the overall picture of your small business even better.
- Decide what the job is that you are hiring for-Even if you are looking for someone who will be the office gofer or "jack of all trades" you need to be very clear about that in your job description. You want to make sure that you not trying to fill a particular job that is vastly different then what you really need. Keep in mind that you cannot be to specific about the job that you are hiring for. Many times small business owners who fail to do this quickly become frustrated when they can't find the employee they need. In addition, job applicants become frustrated when the job isn't what was advertised and no one wins. Make sure that you are very clear with all potential employees about what you are looking for. If you need someone who can be flexible and switch tasks quickly then you need to communicate that during the interviewing process. It is important to take plenty of time when you are going through the hiring process. This will help to make sure that you hire the right person for the right job.
- Decide how to make the job appealing-Many small business owners feel that they can't compete with their larger competition because they don't have the money to match salaries. However, it is important to understand that this is often not necessary. There are many job applicants who are looking for the opportunity and freedom of working for a smaller business. In addition, savvy small business owners know to offer their job applicants other reasons to come and work for them. You may be able to offer scheduling perks, telecommuting, or even a gym membership that will entice a top job candidate to come and work for you. However, it is imperative that you are fully honest with what you can offer now and what will be possible in the future. You don't want to hire someone under false pretenses only to lose a good employee when you can't deliver what you have promised.
