Creating A Workplace Of Respect

When you talk about employee health you usually center on obesity, smoking, and other things. However health refers to so many things like mental health and even cultural health. What are you doing to provide a healthy working environment to your employees? Are you offering them a company that is safe? Do you work hard to make your working environment into a place that respects everyone and gives your employees a chance to feel appreciated? Respect is a huge part of employee health as it has an impact on the way that a person works and their desire to come to work each day. When people are respected, their personality changes, they are upbeat and happy. People want to come to work when they are respected and treated properly. When a person is treated poorly, they rarely want to come to work and they often end up dealing with other issues like stress and depression. Employers have a huge responsibility to provide their staff members with adequate respect and to ensure that their employees love working for the company.

Some of the different ways that you can create a company that works hard to bring respect to the table daily include the following:
- Host classes that talk about certain issues in the workplace like office bullying and discrimination. Some people just need to hear and see the issues to get the motivation they need to change. You have to consider getting outside professionals to come in and do the classes as the employees usually respond favorably to other speakers besides their boss and co-workers. Motivational speakers are great options to bring in for your company!
- Create a zero tolerance policy about disrespect along with discrimination and harassment. Everyone is equal no matter who is the manager and who is paid a higher salary! It is vital that you create a good policy and that you follow through with it. When you have people in violation of the policy, call them out on it and discipline them. Everyone needs to be held accountable to the policy.
- Clear reporting procedures. This helps your employees to feel comfortable in talking to you about issues that they see occurring. Some companies will use an anonymous reporting system as the employee may be embarrassed about talking to you. Just get familiar with your staff and know their limits and how you can help them to feel comfortable in talking to you about the issues that they see happening all the time within the company.
- Set an example! You need to create the culture in the way that you act. Do you walk around and offer helpful advice to your staff members? Do you compliment them? Look at yourself in the mirror and really see what type of example you are setting for everyone else. If you don't have a good example for them, how can you expect them to actually feel good about working for the company and to treat others kindly?

As a manager you owe it to yourself and your employees to create a company that has a fun and creative culture. People will desire to work where it's fun to come in and share time with each other! You need to take the time to really work on changing polices and bringing humor into the workplace so everyone can have fun yet still remain productive. Watch for signs of bullying and stress as these are going to be issues that can plague your company and can also lead to a lot of production loss, sick leave, and morale issues.
