Do Not Allow Harassment To Come To Your Company
Harassment in the workplace often happens when you have people that intolerant of others. For whatever reason it may be, they are not respectful of other people and they feel that they are better than them. You have to know what types of personalities are like this and to ask serious and hard questions in the interview process to try and identify the people that may inhibit qualities like this. This is one of the only ways in which you will be able to keep your company free from harassment and to ensure that you have people that like one another and respect each other. The way that people see how they are to act in the workplace will come from management. If you are showing your employees that it is okay for you to go out and be rude to people and to treat people disrespectfully, they will do the same. People will feel that because their boss does certain things that they can do these things too. Harassment comes in many forms and you need to be ready to tackle it so that you don't end up having people dread coming to work because of how they are treated. You also need to be able to understand how you are tolerant of others and how you treat them. If you are not respectful and kind, why would your employees do anything differently? Harassment is an issue that you can fix by having some clear company policies. You need to be able to have a policy that your employees can understand and will be able to identify with. It is important that you show discipline to people that are caught in violation of the policies. This is the only way that you will be able to enforce it and for people to actually take you seriously. If you are not following through with your threats, they know that they can get away with them. Communicate frequently with your staff and talk to them about harassment. Have a system for people to report harassment so that you don't end up with people that hate their jobs because they are harassed all the time. You must work on constant communication with your staff and to recognize when a person is not up to their normal work capacity to see that there is an issue. Sometimes this person may be a "loner" as they don't interact with others and they often seem depressed. Call them into your office and find out if they are being discriminated and harassed by their co-workers. While it is good to hope that people will not disrespect each other and engage in harassment, it's not the case. It's still something that employers face and it's something that you need to get rid of before it gets worse and causes you to lose valuable employees. |
