One of the best things that you can do to promote employee health is put measures into place that will reduce the spread of germs in your business. Many different infectious diseases are easily spread in the workplace. The basis of the problem is the fact that it only takes one sick employee to spread a major illness through your whole staff. However, there are steps that you can take that will help to reduce the chances of this happening. Best of all, most of these steps are not only easy to take but are affordable and will pay off in happier, healthier, and more productive employees who use less sick time and health insurance. Here is what you need to know about how to reduce the spread of germs in your business-

- Take precautionary measures-One of the easiest ways to stop the spread of germs in the workplace is by trying to get ahead of it. You can set out bottles of hand sanitizer, tissues, antibacterial wipes, and other items that will remind employees to keep their hands clean and allow them to sanitize commonly used and shared items such as keyboards, phones, doorknobs, and anything else in your business that multiple people touch. While there is no guarantee that this will keep everyone 100% well by taking a few preventative measures you can drastically cut down on the amount of germs that are spread around.
- Hire a janitorial service-In an effort to cut costs many employers are letting their cleaning crews go and using their employees to clean their business. This is never a good idea. Chances are that your employees will only do enough to get by and most will probably resent being asked to clean. Keep in mind that a professional cleaning service will use antibacterial cleaning solutions that will keep your place of business much cleaner and healthier for your employees. It is also important to understand that in this case you really do "get what you pay for". Professional cleaning is not cheap but if you hire the right people you will find that your office is much cleaner and your employees are much healthier which can save you big money in the long run.
- Offer sick time-Many employers feel that they can't afford to offer sick time when in reality most employers can't afford not to offer it. Keep in mind that most of your employees will feel like they can't afford to take time off if they are sick. This means that they will come to work and possibly infect your entire staff. Worse yet, having a sick employee at work not only affect their productivity but that of their co-workers as well. The best policy is to offer sick time and enforce the use of it. This will isolate the sick employee, and keep them from infecting the rest of your staff, and help them to recover faster. If you feel that sick time will be abused many employers have combated this by asking for a doctor's note before paying it.
- Provide a break room-You may be surprised to learn that a break room can go a long way toward keeping your employees healthier. When your employees have no place to store food, eat, or even go to they increase the chances of germs being spread. Providing a break room (and making sure it is kept clean), is a way that employees can store healthy lunches (that stay healthy), and keep crumbs and other food debris from piling up in the work area. This simple preventative measure can go a long way toward helping to keep your employees healthier and happier.
