Licenses needed to start a small business

investmentagent16485586.jpg
Starting a new business can be a very confusing process if the potential business owner has not done their homework. Every city and state has different laws and requirements when it comes to starting a new business. For the most part, the different requirements are all variations of a few basic elements. The following are a few generally requirements that may be required by a city or state government before a small business can commence operation.

Proper Licenses

No matter where a potential small business owner wishes to start their company it is likely that they will need to acquire a small business license. The process for gaining a license will be different in each city or state, but most will require an application fee, the name of the owner, and the name of the company. Others might also want to know the nature of the business and where the owner plans to operate. Business owners should make sure to gain access to all of the requirements for their geographic location to make sure that they are in compliance to all of the laws before they ever open their doors for business.

Certificate of Occupancy

Most local governments will require a certificate of occupancy. This is important so that it is clear where the new business will be operating from. A certificate of occupancy will also protect the small business owner from being forced to leave a certain area. If the small business will be portable, or will set up in a park or on a sidewalk, they should gain permission from the city. This will ensure that competing portable businesses do not steal a certain location, and it will protect the small business owner from being forced to leave and fined for not following city regulations regarding street vendors.

Business Insurance

In order to acquire a business license, or at least to begin operation, many governments will require that the business have some sort of business insurance. Just like an individual will buy home owners insurance or car insurance to protect these assets from disasters or accidents, a small business owner should have insurance to protect their business from disasters or accidents. Because a small business is usually so dependent on the markets in their area, a natural disaster could completely destroy them. Business insurance will help protect the business owner from these instances.

Liability Insurance

Liability insurance is important to have in order to further protect the small business owner. For instance, if a customer were to get injured on the property of a small business, that business could be liable for those injuries. Most small businesses are not in a position to defend against litigation or to pay the hospital bills of a client who was injured on business property. Liability will cover the small business is instances such as these.

Small Business Counseling

Many communities seeking to boost their economy will host a small business center where potential small business owners can go and get help with the process of opening a business. These locations will have advisors that are familiar with the local laws and procedures for starting a new company. Potential small business owners would be wise to seek advice from these locations instead of trying to wade through the process on their own.

Potential small business owners should be sure that they have acquired all of the necessary licenses before ever opening their doors. While the laws and requirements may vary from location to location, companies should look into getting a business license, a certificate of occupancy, and insurance. If they have any questions or are unsure of the local laws, they could also consult with a small business start-up location.
