Starting a small business is not an easy task. If you dream of owning your own small business you may find that there is extensive planning, working, and other tasks to be completed long before you even begin opening your small business! However, if you take the time to carefully consider certain factors before you even begin the process of opening a small business the chances are much higher that you will be successful. Because these factors will greatly influence whether or not your small business is successful it is important to take the time to carefully consider them. Here are some things consider before starting a small business-

- What type of business do you have the expertise to run? If you are going to be a small business owner then the first step is to decide what type of small business you are going to open. Business experts suggest that you choose a business that you have at least some kind of expertise to run. While you don't need to know everything about your chosen small business you should at least have a working knowledge. Do not let the glamour or excitement of certain professions fool you into thinking that you can run that type of small business if you don't have the expertise and experience. It may sound great to run a travel agency but if you have never gone anywhere this can be a difficult sell. Your odds of running a successful small business will increase if you choose a business that is based on something you are experienced with.
- How self motivated are you? Small business owners have to be highly motivated. If you are used to working for a boss that required you to be at work certain hours and perform certain tasks then you must understand that now you will be the boss. You will need to be comfortable with the fact that you will have to motivate yourself to get work every morning and stay at work until the tasks are done. If you have trouble with self motivation you may want to consider becoming a small business owner.
- Are you comfortable taking risks?Successful small business owners are risk takers. However, most importantly you should understand that that successful small business owners know when to take risks and when to pull back. You will need to be able to gauge when you should take on risk in order to promote and grow your small business and when to pull back. If you are uncomfortable with taking risk and failing then small business ownership may not be for you. You should also be able to tell when a risky situation can pay off for you and when risk should be avoided.
- Do you have the money you need? One of the major considerations before starting a small business will have to be with the financials. First, do you have the money you need to start your small business? Depending on the type of small business that you want to start you may be able to self-fund. If you are looking to start a small business that takes considerable working capital then you will need to review your options. This can be one of the most difficult aspects of starting a small business. Secondly, you will need to review your own personal finances and see if you have enough money to live on while working on your small business. Keep in mind that most small businesses take a long time to become profitable with some even taking over a year. You will need to have a source of income that will allow you to pay your bills while you work on your small business.
