Don't Let Absenteeism Cost Your Company Money

When employees are ill or they are constantly taking time off, it can cost your organization thousands of dollars in lost productivity each year. It is important that you focus on managing your company and your staff effectively so they are not taking off a lot of time. You invest a lot of money into your employees and when they are taking off a lot of time, it definitely decreases your ability to stay productive and costs your company a lot of money. Your productivity will suffer as you do not have people to help maintain the workload and you may end up brining in some temporary employees to help out. These employees may not be able to keep up with the demands that you have and it is also likely that your other employees will need to adjust their work schedules to try and make up for the work that the other employees are not getting done.

Offering sick leave to your employees is seen as a great perk but it is something that a lot of people will end up taking advantage of. People often take sick leave whenever they feel like it and they aren't really sick. This is common but then what happens when they use up all their sick leave and then do become ill? They will need to take more time off and usually they are not worried about not getting paid as they would rather have the extra time off. What happens to your company is you are left behind trying to scramble to fulfill job orders and other things and to maintain productivity when you are short-staffed. You may not know how long until the sick employee will be back in the workplace and this can cause serious problems with productivity but it can also lead to employee morale concerns as well.

Preventing some of the reasons why people take sick leave is a smart idea. Some of the reasons why they could be using sick leave is due to high amounts of stress. As an employer you have a responsibility to try and manage the stress load of your staff. Notice when they are getting overwhelmed and focus your efforts on reducing their work loads and trying to help them learn how to manage stress. This is an important thing to do as it will be able to help you keep your employees in the office since they will not deal with burnout nearly as much.

Workplace accidents are another big thing that you need to be concerned about. You have to focus on maintaining your equipment and to ensure that it is in it's proper working condition. When you can prevent a lot of the potential accidents and hazards in the workplace it will lead to happier employees but also people that are not as worried about coming to work each day as there is the risk that they could be hurt.

Watch for trends in the ways that your employees are taking time off. Do they tend to take off time when there is a long weekend? If they have requested time off and you did not give it to them, notice if they end up calling in sick that day, you need to approach them. This is the type of sick leave abuse that you need to control and prevent as soon as possible. Allowing people to abuse their sick leave like this can end up costing you a lot of money but it sets the tone to the rest of your staff that it is okay to use up sick leave any time they desire instead of using it for what it's really for.
