Lifelong Health At The Office

It can be difficult for anyone to maintain good health while keeping up with the stress of daily life. A full-time job takes away time needed to focus on eating healthy. You can help employees get into the groove of living a more satisfying, balanced lifestyle. Just a few changes to the work environment can spark real changes in each employee's life.

Begin With Education
Employees are hired for skill in their specific position, not for knowing anything about health. Thus many American adults need some kind of education about eating healthy and staying fit. Living a sedentary lifestyle, working from a desk all day long, aggravates health problems. Encourage exercise through emails and even a health seminar.
Offer Classes
Offer aerobic and other fitness night classes. Many employees just need time and the space to work out. You can even put a gym in the office with just a few machines. Something is better than nothing.
Gifts Of Work
When the time comes for the company party, choose healthy alternatives to the usual prizes that are either too expensive or no one wants. Give the gift of health. Offer gym memberships and subscriptions to health magazines. Give gift certificates to produce markets or health food places. Gift cards for sporting goods stores are sure to be appreciated. Who doesn't love camping, boating, hunting, and waterproof cameras? These are gifts that are less likely to be re-gifted.
Host The Party With Health In Mind
At company picnics and parties, there is often nothing to eat for those "healthy" people. So spice it up from the usual. Instead of pastries, offer salads. Instead of cookies, offer lovely vegetable trays and whole-wheat baked crackers with cheese. Beautiful fruit creations can be ordered as centerpieces and are sure to make a splash. Offer delicate sandwiches on whole wheat bread, even.
Make the feast family-friendly by kicking out the alcohol. Bring in the virgin margaritas and sparkling ciders. Most people appreciate a break from the usual. Forget watching others get drunk and having to worry about their safety.
People get in car accidents after company parties thinking that their blood alcohol level is acceptable. The catch 22 is that when you have some in your system you are more likely to feel invincible, as though you can react better than usual. This mentality is simply not true and leads to devastating accidents each year. As the law says, buzzed driving is drunk driving. So prevent the name of your company from being paired with such accidents and choose drug-free (booze free) parties. Lots of attendees will thank you later.
Change Out The Drinks
Alcohol is bad for the body just as coffee and soda pop is (though the latter may have less of an effect). So instead of offering free coffee in the mornings, offer free herbal tea, or save some money and cut out the drinks altogether. Caffeine gets the heart going beyond how fast it needs to go while sitting still. It can be the catalyst for many disorders.
Vending Madness
The same goes for soda pop. It is bad for the body. So replace its presence in vending machines and the work cafeteria with flavored water and low-fat milk. Also switch out the chips and other high sugar, high calorie items with better alternatives. Offer fruit and fresh sandwiches.
Some companies choose to bring in an outside source to fill their vending machines with good, fresh foods. This is a healthier alternative to the usual junk. It gets rid of empty calories that do nothing for the body.
Start today to make the office a better place. A little encouragement goes a long way when it comes to maintaining good health.
