Getting Help With Mental Health

Dealing with mental health concerns in the workplace can really cripple your company. Unlike physical health issues, it is hard to detect when a person is suffering from a mental health condition and it is quite difficult for your other employees to understand how to adjust and to help their co-workers. You need to be able to recognize some of the signs that there is a mental health issue to be aware of and how you can aid in giving the employee help. Mental health issues do not just take their toll on your employees that are suffering from it but also the other people that need to work with them as they have to deal with the emotional stress and drama that it can create. It is possible that everyone will deal with some type of mental health issue sometime in their life. From issues like financial stress to job loss or welcoming a new baby into your life, there will always be some type of factor that is going to cause a mental health issue to arise at least once. You need to be able to find ways in which you can improve your own mental health and as an employer you need to focus on helping your staff members to confront their issues as well.

Decision making
One of the signs that you or an employee could be dealing with mental health problems is due to poor decision making. You need to watch your employees and to do what you can in helping them but to know that when they are wishy washy on making decisions that there could be an issue that needs to be addressed.

Failure to meet deadlines
Another way to know that you might be dealing with a mental health concern is when you see an employee that is struggling to meet their deadlines all the time. You may see that they are working quite slowly or that they seem distracted all the time. They often miss deadlines and do not seem to care that they do miss their deadlines.

Absenteeism
When a person is suffering from any type of mental illness, it can become a real struggle for them just to get out of bed and come to work. If you notice an increase in the amount of sick leave that they are taking, it may indicate you have a mental health issue that you need to address.

Anger or Depression
Do you have an employee that reacts with anger out of the blue or a person that seems to become quite distraught when you do not agree with them? Mental health issues can bring out negative qualities of this individual and it can be quite difficult for you to be able to deal with them and the various outbursts that they have.

When it comes to dealing with mental health in the office, it is not your job to diagnose or treat it. You can only recommend to the employees that they find ways to focus on improving their mental health and to really point them in the right direction to get the help and support that they need. You need to be constructive and supportive of your employees and just let them know that you have noticed some of these issues and that you are concerned about them. Offering them accommodations for their mental health concerns will aid in helping them to finally address the issues that they have as some people may have a hard time really recognizing that there is a problem with their mental health.
