Obese employees are actually costing employers millions of dollars a year in healthcare costs. Obese employees visit the doctor more frequently and they are at risk for several health problems from heart disease to diabetes and other expensive issues. Many employers find that their obese employees are not as productive and they often take more time off from your healthy employees. Businesses need to be concerned about obese employees as they are causing serious financial impacts to occur.

Out of all the studies done, one of the most recent was conducted by Duke University and they found that obese employees end up cost the company nearly $800 to $7000 extra per employee each year. This is a high expense that you do need to be concerned about. With these rising numbers and the obesity rate continuing to be out of control it is vital that you look for ways in which you can encourage your employees to get in shape and to really cut down on their BMI.

Many employers have turned to programs like wellness programs in order to reduce obesity in the office. These programs help to raise awareness around employee health and can provide you with a reducing into obesity but can really give you insight into your employee's health. Depending upon the program you use, you may decide to conduct health assessments of your staff. This way you can find out what type of shape your entire company is in and it will help you to determine what type of wellness program you need to implement.

Creating a healthy workplace comes down to helping employees to understanding what they need to do differently in order to become healthier but also offering them help by getting rid of the foods and things that can be dangerous to their health. You should consider replacing your vending machine junk food with healthier options like granola bars and 100% fruit juice over soda and candy bars. When you do this, it will help to reduce the dependency on unhealthy foods. Employees often need a little pick me up in the day and they will turn to the vending machines to find foods that can give them that little pick me up.

If you host regular meetings where you provide lunch start offering healthier options to your employees. It's a good idea to bring in salads versus always having heavier foods for lunch. You need your employees to start focusing on healthier eating so they can reduce their weight and to stop using foods that are not going to give them proper energy to perform their job duties.

What are some other things you can do about health and wellness? How about offering your employees discounts on gym memberships? This is a great way to encourage them to get in shape as they will end up using the gym membership and do not need to pay for it or can get it for a lower cost. It's a great motivator for many of your employees and can help to reduce obesity.

Employers need to set the tone for their staff members. Make sure they see you working out in the office during lunch hours or breaks. Work hard to eat healthier at the office so your staff can see how important healthy eating is to you. As you set an example, it makes it a lot easier for your employees to follow suit. If you implement a wellness program you need to really believe in it. If you are committed, it will be much easier for your employees to also commit to the program and to start working on losing weight as well.
