There are many steps to take in the process of starting your business. Those who dream of owning their own business often think they just need to set shop and open their door or set up their web site and the money will roll in.That is simply not reality. In order to be effective in business you will need an effective business plan.Your business plan will not only serve as a guide to you but will be a tool in order to gain funding from investors and banks. It will guide your marketing, influence how your hire employees and even who you target your product or service to. While writing a business plan can seem overwhelming there are simple steps you can take to break down the entire process. Some of the things you should think about before writing a business plan for your small business are-

  • Know what you are doing in business. You should start by making sure that you are able to clearly define your business idea and that you are able to articulate it properly. In order to do this, you will need to know what your mission is. It is important not to be swayed by trends or what may seem popular at the moment.Remember you want to be in business for a long time so pick something you are going to enjoy doing for a long time.
  • Have a passion. You will have to thoroughly examine your motives for getting into your business. It is important to make sure that you have a passion for owning a business and for owning your business in particular.
  • Know the costs. You have to be willing to commit to the hours, discipline, continuous learning and the frustrations that go along with owning your own business. Those small business owners will tell you firsthand that while the rewards can be high in owning your own business the days can be long.
  • Know the market. You should first conduct a competitive analysis in your market that should include: products, prices, promotions, advertising, distribution, quality, service, and you will also want to be aware of the outside influences that will inevitably affect your business, such as the competition.
  • Network your business. You will want to seek out help from other small businesses, vendors, professionals, government agencies, employees, trade associations, and trade shows. Do not forget to do your research on the internet and in trade publications. Do not be afraid to seek out help just about anywhere that you can think of.

Having focused on what you should think about when you are creating your business plan, you can now begin the actual creation of a good business plan. The hardest part about creating a business plan may be getting the energy together to get started. At first it can seems like a truly daunting task. But once you get going you will find out how to write a business plan. You can begin with some of the easy steps first. Some of these are as follows:

  • Describe your business and what makes it stand out

  • Talk about the specific market that you are targeting

  • Explain what stage of development your business is in (such as is it brand new or are buying someone else out).

Keep in mind that if you get hung up on a particular part of the plan, you should not worry because you can skip it for now and just come back and fill it in later. You also do not have to worry about making a perfect first draft either because you can just get some thoughts down to start the process and you can always come back and fix it up later.
