Every successful business owner understands that marketing is the lifeblood of their business. This is especially true for small businesses that may have limited marketing resources. The bottom line is that if your customers are not aware of where they can find you, or what your small business can offer them, how can they know they should buy from you?Marketing lets your target market know where they can find your small business, and what products and service you offer. This means that marketing is crucial to the long term success of your small business.

The essence of effective marketing is developing a relationship with your customers. In order to do this you will need to have a clear understanding of what your customers are looking for and then have a marketing plan that can address their needs. Overlooking the need for effective marketing can literally be a fatal mistake, for your small business. The bottom line is that you must have a successful marketing plan, if your small business will have a chance to thrive and grow. There are different ways that you can do this. Here are some ways to market your small business-

  • Do not overlook the need to do market research-Market research will let you know where your customers are and what the best ways are to reach them. In order to develop an effective marketing message, you must have this information. Simply taking the "shotgun" approach to marketing and spreading your message everywhere is rarely effective.

  • Have a plan-Once you have completed your market research you will be able to formulate a plan, in order to be successful in sending your marketing message, to your target market. You will need to have a plan that will maximize both your marketing dollars, and your marketing message. Once you have determined your plan, you can then begin to market effectively.

  • Consider pricing as part of marketing-One of the integral parts of your marketing message, will be the price you set for your products or services. However, it should be noted that price alone should not determine your marketing strategy. Rather you should keep in mind that if you price your products or services to low, your customers will feel that what you are offering lacks value. Conversely if you price your products or services to high, your customers will go elsewhere to find what you offer for a better price.

  • Find the problem, offer the solution-Successful businesses find that the most effective way to market their product or services, is to determine what the problem is that bring their customers in. They will then devise their marketing to reflect how their product or service is the solution to that problem. You will need to determine what will cause your target market to seek out your product or service, and then provide what your offer as the solution, in your marketing message.

  • Know who you are marketing to-No matter how much market research you have done, how great your plan is and perfectly priced your product or services are, if you don't know who you are marketing to, then there is little chance that your marketing will be effective. You need to take the time and make the effort, to find out everything you can about your target market. You need to know as much as you can about every aspect of their lives, and their buying habits. Once you know who your customers are and what they are looking for, and most importantly where you can find them, you have just increased the chances that your marketing will be successful.
