Savvy business owners will understand that they need to have plan for their marketing. Just like any other facet of your business it is crucial to have a plan that will guide and chart your progress with your marketing. If you fail to plan the chances are quite low that you will not be effective with your marketing. The best way to design a marketing plan is to set marketing goals that will guide you in the direction that you want to go. While this can be a challenge setting marketing goals will give you a path to travel as you work your marketing plan. Here is what you need to know about how to set marketing goals-

- Look at the big picture-The first step in setting marketing goals is to look at the big picture. You need to clearly determine what you want to achieve with the marketing goals that you set. It can be helpful to ask yourself certain questions to which the answers will begin to show you what direction you want to go with your marketing. Some of the pertinent questions include but are not limited to-
1. What is my marketing budget? What can I realistically spend?
2. What kind of rate of return will I need from my marketing?
3. What amount of time and effort will I need to commit to my marketing plan?
- Determine the end result-In order to chart a path of progress you will need to have an end marketing goal in sight. While it will be fairly obvious that you want to generate sales with your marketing goals you should try and determine what that amount will be. The best way to do this is by doing the right amount of market research. When you have a clear idea of who you will be marketing to, why they would want to buy your product or service, and what their income and other pertinent factors are you will be able to choose an end result to work towards. You should also have a clear idea of exactly who your competition is and what they are doing in terms of their marketing.
- Have the right people help-Once you have the above listed information in hand then you can begin to work on your marketing goals. You may need to bring in additional people to help you set the right marketing goals for your business. You can ask other business owners, consult with the financial professionals who work for you, and even consult with marketing firms if you need additional help. If you have employees who work for you then it can be helpful to meet with them and get their insight as well. The bottom line is that you should not feel that you have to set marketing goals alone. There is plenty of help to assist you with this process.
- Monitor and make changes if necessary-Many business owners make the mistake of setting marketing goals and then walking away. It is important to understand that it will not be enough to set one time marketing goals for your business. You will need to keep in mind that marketing is a dynamic process with factors that are always influencing it. You should periodically be checking up on how your marketing plan is working and whether or not you are on the right path to achieve your marketing goals. It is also important to understand that you may need to make changes along the way if you are monitoring and seeing that you are not on the path to achieving your marketing goals.
