Getting higher rankings
When planning the marketing strategies for a website, one of the most important focuses should be rankings. In other words, how can you get higher rankings? The following are a few of the best tips for improving your rankings, and optimizing your website:
Be a unique blogger
A blog is a very useful tool for marketing. It is the perfect way to give your marketing campaign a voice, and a face. It is also a great way to get loyal, long term, customers, and keep them in the loop. The following is a look at how to be a unique blogger so that you catch interest, and keep it.
5 Blogging Mistakes
A blog can be a powerful marketing tool, but not if you use it the wrong way. The following are the four mistakes people make when they want to use their blog as a marketing tool. If you avoid these mistakes, you avoid a lot of the problems that make your blog a worthless tool for marketing.
When marketing choose win-win affiliates
When you market, one of your options is using affiliates. This is a relationship where they market your products on their site, etc. in exchange, you pay them for any business they send your way. The idea of this is a great one. However, it is important that you choose your partners wisely. A partner that is a drain, or costs more than they are worth can set you back far more than they might help you, so it is critical that you choose the businesses that will do you the most good. Here are a few things to consider when choosing marketing partners:
Using Twitter for marketing
Twitter can be a powerful marketing tool, or a complete waste of time. If you want to be able to use Twitter to market, you have to learn the way to do it properly.
1. Do not do too much self-promoting. No one is going to follow you, or pay attention to what you tweet if you are constantly self-promoting. You have to earn that right. You should only promote one time for every fifty valuable tweets. People get sick of hearing you tweet their own horn, so make sure you earn that right by providing value first, and promotion second.
Give it free, and get something in return
An old but good marketing strategy is to give something away for free to perspective customers. If you give people something for free they will feel obligated to return the favor. What does this mean? It means that if you help someone out, it creates a natural desire to return the favor. It doesn't mean you have to give your products away for free, it means give a sampling, a bit of information, a teaser, or something else to help you gain the customer's trust and hook them.

Marketing Campaign No No's

Try it for awhile and you will see the results. People want to buy from businesses that understand them and what they want. If your business can't do that, they won't buy from you.

What should be part of a marketing plan?

Before any company begins any type of marketing strategy or campaign, a well-researched and written plan should be done. It gives the company direction and focus, thus improving their effort and increasing their rate of success. But what should be part of a marketing plan? Here are a few questions to ask yourself and some suggestions to consider:
Target Market
What demographic(s) are you targeting in your marketing strategy? This is one of the most important things to consider. The way you present your product or service is almost completely dependent on whose business you want. Depending on who you are marketing you, you will choose different words, images, trends, and role models to help sell your product.
The old and the new in marketing techniques

Old and new marketing techniques are being used in unique combinations by virtually all businesses hoping to attract customers. There are few methods of marketing that have never been tried before and many old techniques are either still in use or have been altered to match the needs of changing times and changing consumer preferences. Below you will read brief summaries about just a few of the old and new marketing techniques. Reading about these techniques may help you in developing your own marketing strategies today.
Retaining clients through marketing

Some of the best marketers will tell you, if you don't retain your clients, why bother marketing? It is one of the hardest and yet the easiest things to do. Keeping your clients happy is always what people focus on, which is a good point. However, have you taken the time to get to know your clients? If not, try out these simple steps, they are easy and painless.
1. Meeting people and making introductions
- 10 second description of who you are and what you do.
2. Dress to Impress
- People judge you the second they see you. Make sure the clothing you wear reflect the image of the company.
Marketing to your peer group

Peer groups are a great way to brainstorm ideas and come to know how exactly to market to your clients. If you are marketing to your peers, you know this can be a difficult and challenging process. The purpose of the peer group is for you to gain feedback from them to help gain support for your ideas.
How do you market to your peers?
First, you have to act and look like a leader. Prepare a great presentation that you have rehearsed several times in the mirror to the point that you know it almost word for word. Come to the meeting early so you can set up your laptop if you are doing a PowerPoint presentation. Dress for success! Make sure you are not overdressed or underdressed. If this is a company retreat and everyone is in jeans, go ahead with that, but try a button up shirt instead of a hoodie!
How to know if you are marketing to the wrong group.

One of the greatest things you can learn with marketing is your target audience. Have you ever put together a great marketing strategy and it failed? Many mistakes marketers make is that they market to the wrong group. How do you know if you are marketing to the wrong group?
No result from marketing campaign
If spent a lot of time and energy learning who you think your target audience and then send out a great campaign and no result comes. You need to evaluate what happened. Did you send out your direct mail pieces at the wrong time? Is the economy in a recession? Did you try targeting a new group? A lot of factors can be a result of nothing returning from your campaign, you just need to find out what effected your campaign.
Marketing to businesses versus people

What is the difference between marketing to businesses versus people? Some people believe it is the same strategy because businesses are run by people. Technically, that is true, but marketing to a business is very different from marketing to people.
A person buying a product for themselves versus for their company is a different strategy. Companies don't buy Ipods, they buy computers. Both marketing strategies follow the same opening path; identify the customer and why they would want to hear from you.
Marketing to the baby boomers

The baby boomer generation (people born in the years 1946 - 1964) is the largest demographic in America. This group also has trillions of dollars of spending power. It would only make sense, then, that most companies are trying to tap into this demographic. By marketing to the baby boomers in the right way, companies can make a huge profit while also building customer loyalty.
As the baby boomers begin to age and approach retirement, their demand for certain goods and services will change, according to their needs. Marketing techniques for this age group will have to adapt. In other words, marketing tactics that worked when the baby boomers were in their 30's may not work for them when they're in their 50's and 60's. Here a few things to keep in mind when marketing to the baby boomers:
Marketing to a teenage girl, what to consider

It seems like it should be pretty easy to market to teenage girls. Their likes, dislikes, trends, and interests are already marketed like crazy, so one would think it'd be easy to just slip in and find a niche in the teen market. Not so. Instead, marketing to a teenage girl needs to be done in certain ways and it's important to know what to consider.
Teenagers, both boys and girls, are very aware that they are being marketed to constantly. They just need to turn on the television, open a magazine, or even go to school. Schools themselves are open to companies marketing to kids at school - how many soda machines are in the cafeterias and common rooms in a typical junior high and high school? Just that one example can give an idea of how bombarded teens are by companies' marketing tactics.

Knowing how to market to the middle-aged man is important to any business. The baby boomers (who are currently the middle-aged) make up the largest demographic out there and the better a company can market to them, the higher their profit and popularity will be. When marketing to a middle-aged man there are few important things to consider.
One of the things to keep in mind is the middle-aged man's life experience. Marketing is something that a company is constantly working on and perfecting. Finding the right way to market to a certain group or demographic can be challenging, but can come with lots of rewards, both in terms of customer loyalty and financial returns. The key to doing this most effectively is to be well versed in the various ways to market. Here are a few marketing techniques and tactics defined to get you on the right track:
Stand Above the Rest
Find some way to make yourself unique. What makes you different than the competition? Is there something you offer that they don't? It could be one facet of the way you do business. Maybe you are focused on providing excellent customer service, quick results, or your product/service is a better value than others. Find that advantage and promote it in your advertising, showing your customers that you can stand above the rest.
Marketing mistakes defined

Marketing is an important part of any business - it can either make or break it. Marketing is all about how you present yourself, your business, your product and/or service. One way to ensure that your marketing techniques are effective is to avoid some of the common marketing mistakes. Here are three common marketing mistakes defined and some solutions:
Mistake #1: Unclear Message
You can plan your marketing strategy as much as you want, but if your message is confusing all effort will be lost. Sometimes, companies will come up with a slogan that is complicated, muddled, or abstract. You may think it is a clever slogan, for example, but it may not have a broad appeal. Have you ever watched a commercial or looked at an ad in a magazine and wondered, "What is this an ad for?" Unless there is some kind of follow-up strategy (which is still risky), this is definitely not the type of response you want.
Learning to market to a specific group

If you are a business owner you need to put yourself in the shoes of your customers. Do you know why they buy your products or services? Is your pricing appropriate to maximize the potential profit or your product or service? Do you feel that your marketing is adequate when all you do is to simply knock off 20% to 30% whenever clients turn scarce or inventory creeps up? Most importantly have you set any marketing targets or sales goals for the next 12 months or so? If you do not have a plan on how to best market your product or service you may not be reaching the specific group who can best utilize your product or service and bring you the highest potential profit.

Direct mail or "snail mail" has become less popular in the computer age. This might be good news for your company if you are still engaging in direct mail marketing. The reason for this is that there is less "junk mail" stuffing people's mailboxes these days. Less junk mail means there is a greater likelihood that your mailer will be opened and read. If you are going to implement a great marketing plan, you have to include strategy in the plan. Too often, marketing plans consist of an overview of where the company is at and where the company plans to go. This is great but it isn't a plan. That's like saying, "I'm here in Utah and I'd like to get to Cabo San Lucas", it might be true but it isn't much of a plan. A plan details the steps that are going to be taken to get from point A to point B. For example, I'm going to save X amounts of dollars, take the second week of August off, and fly down on Delta. The first step to implementing a marketing plan is to have a plan.
Once you have a plan, you will need to focus on four different steps to get the plan moving. First, you need to focus on the product (or service) that you are marketing. Part of your marketing plan might be to improve the product somehow. You might focus on making the product more appealing, improving the quality, or adding new features. Everything can be improved in one way or another and the first part of your marketing plan should be to see that the thing you are marketing is as good as it can be.

This may seem like a rudimentary question to some, but the plain fact is that everyone in business needs to review the importance of marketing from time to time. From time to time, we need to remind ourselves just why it is we rely on marketing for our bread and butter. Let's look at a few of the reasons why marketing is so key to making profits.
Being in business is expensive. Let's say, for example, that we're producing a line of funny T-shirts. We're producing and selling these hilarious T-shirts that are very popular with the masses-and that's a good thing, right? I mean, the whole point of being in businesses is to develop a product or service that people really want, and to sell it to them at a good price, and to make a good living that way. But complications do arise. Let's say that we've only recently started selling these T-shirts and the demand rises too sharply for us to keep up with. Lots of people want them, but we can't afford to (a) make X number of T-shirts and (b) send them all over the country and so forth.

Marketing is a tough, complicated job, with rich rewards for those who stick to their task. Marketing is the process of getting something prepared for the market, and then selling it in the market. That is marketing, simply defined. But if we pare it down like that it might lead to a more fruitful discussion. We've broken it up into two parts, (1) preparing something for the market, and (2) selling it to the market. Today let's focus on (1) preparing something for the market. Why is it important to be prepared BEFORE you start marketing? Well, perhaps that isn't the way to frame it, see. Marketing is a whole process; what comes BEFORE, marketing-wise, is as important as what comes AFTER. So let's consider a few things about this BEFORE process, the preparatory part of marketing.
1. How would a person go about preparing something for the market? How would a businessperson, a marketing team, a company go about such a task? What are some things they might consider?

Marketing means more than just advertising. Marketing means more than television commercials, radio spots, magazine ads, and so forth. Marketing is the whole huge process of preparing a product or service for the market. Marketing includes things such as how you price a product, how you advertise a product, how you deliver a product and receive payment for it, your company's image (which will go a long way in selling said product), and so forth. Given the fact that marketing means a range of things, when we speak of collecting data for a marketing plan we're talking about a range of data.
Constructing your internet marketing plans
You company has decided to implement an internet marketing campaign, but your not sure where to begin. You want to have an amazing web site, as well as all the ways to bring prospective customers to your site. But how should you go about it? Should you have your own employees do it or hire an agency to do it? What kind of computer equipment should you use, or should you hire an IT firm to do it all?
Build your web site.
All the traffic building strategies in the world won't help you if your web site is no good. Once you have a web site you can be proud of, the rest will fall into place. You can build it yourself or by using your employees. You can also hire an information technology firm to do it and maintain it for you. If your web site is going to be relatively simple, you can look at other web sites that you like, and emulate them. If your site has many pages, on line ordering, order tracking, shopping carts, large customer databases, and a need to be able to handle lots of traffic, then make sure your can meet the demands that will be placed on it. You will do this by making sure that your web servers are powerful enough, and your web development software is up to date using the latest technologies. You will want to make sure that whoever develops your site are using a web development environment that has a proven track record, and that they incorporate flash animation as part of the overall development. Someone on the staff must be good at graphics and photography. If you purchase space from an internet service provider, you will make sure that the amount of disk space and CPU horsepower is enough for the number of customers you expect. Before you release your web site for public use, you will have beta testers find problems, so you can resolve them before the public sees them.

Turn on the television or open a magazine and you'll no doubt be inundated with commercials and ads. More often than not, it's a celebrity or someone else familiar with the product who is endorsing it - the milk industry made dozens of Got Milk? ads that made a point of putting celebrities in milk mustaches. And weight loss chains like Jenny Craig and Nutra System rely on people who have had success with the product to sell it through endorsing it for them.
When used effectively, endorsements and testimonials can have a positive impact on your business in a number of ways, including:

Teens are the hardest demographic to market to. They are the most challenging and unpredictable group to try and reach. As with any marketing strategy the key is to know who you are trying to sell to and what interests those most. Since most teens are still trying to find themselves and don't always know what they want, it's hard for businesses to find out what most matters to them.
Teens are an important age group to market because they have money coming in from allowances, holidays or jobs, and they don't have any bills to pay yet. Most of the money they have will solely be for entertainment and things they want. This is the last time before they are adults that they can be a little careless with their money and not have to worry about financial things.

When it comes to marketing your business, finding the right niche to market your product to is essential. A niche is a specialized area that you can focus your marketing on. When you specialize, your business is more likely to succeed. Say for example you have a sporting goods store. In order to distinguish yourself from the competition, you can establish a niche that will set your apart from everyone else. While you may be able to purchase, say, camping supplies from any sporting goods store, your store could focus on higher-end, luxury camping supplies. Soon, your store will be known for supplying higher-end items that can't be purchased from chain sporting goods stores, no matter how well-known their name is.
This principle applies to all businesses. How you market your niche will determine how successful your business will be. So how do you find that right niche?

Every good businessperson knows that choosing the right marketing plan is one of the most important (if not the most important) building blocks when attempting to create a long-lasting, strong, firm, powerful, influential, rich, constantly growing, constantly improving, constantly branching out, constantly innovating, constantly contributing business. Choosing the right marketing plan is the lifeblood of your business. Choosing the right marketing plan means choosing the face your business wears before the public. Choosing the right marketing plan means choosing your business's "image"-that is, its stance politically, its attitude toward important issues, its commitment to charity and societal healing, and so on and so forth. Choosing the right marketing plan, in other words, is sort of like choosing the personality of your business.
If you think about a marketing plan as you would a personality, new angles and approaches and perspectives are immediately manifest. Everyone has heard the maxim "You can't judge a book by its cover"-and everyone knows it's true-but only to a certain extent. Oftentimes you can judge a book by its cover-for example, if the books cover depicts men in spacesuits fighting green, gooey, one-eyed aliens, and everyone's got laser guns, you automatically make a judgment: "Science fiction." Contrariwise, if the cover depicts a cowboy in pure white fighting a cowboy in pure black, and both of them have six-shooters, you automatically make a judgment: "Western." And so on. If you're standing in line in the grocery store and you see one of those books whose cover depicts a gorgeous, impossibly muscular, golden-haired warrior holding a gorgeous, impossibly busty raven-headed damsel in distress, you don't wonder if it's by Charles Dickens. Perhaps I'm laboring this point a bit, but only to point out that your marketing plan is literally the "cover" of your business.

Building strong products by differentiating
As a business owner, you have probably been asked the question on more than one occasion, "So what makes you different?" What they are wanting to know is; what sets you apart from your competitors. So what is it? Is it your products? Your service? Are you unique? Or, like many people, are you just not sure if you are all that different after all. In order for your business to succeed at gaining and retaining customers, you are going to need to differentiate.
In business terms, to differentiate (also known as USP or Unique Selling Proposition, competitive advantage or value proposition) means to create a benefit that customers perceive as being of greater value to them than what they can get elsewhere. This does not just mean that you are different, the customer has to actually take note of that difference and feel that the difference will somehow fit their need better.

Effective marketing strategies
There are many different ways that you can make effective marketing strategies. Marketing strategies are a very important part of making a business successful. Unique strategies are the most effective marketing strategies. This gets your business noticed and helps people remember your business name.
Depending on the budget your business has available to put towards figuring out the most effective marketing strategies. There are a couple of options. There are many online companies that you can hire to take out all the thinking and time that goes into putting together effective marketing strategies. These companies will track what kind of audience your company is targeting, what marketing strategies sell your products the best, and then they figure out who your best customers are and what can be done to keep them coming back time and time again. But if your budget does not allow you to have some one else figure out what the most effective marketing strategies are, you can do it yourself.

A product management system of marketing is a carefully detailed strategy in the marketing of a product or a service. When those in the marketing department are first given the product they are then left with the decisions as to where to place the product in the market. This is generally done with marketing studies. These studies will determine the product need, product usage, (beyond the obvious functionality of the product) and the demographic that will be most interested in the product.
After this information is received than a campaign is designed to reach the target audience that will either need or just want the selected product. After the demographic of the target audience has been determined than the marketing can be designed that will best reach the selected group.

The highly competitive markets of today are forcing marketers to come up with innovative and unique solutions in their marketing strategies. The fact is the obstacles and choices that are faced in the decisions of positioning a product or service in the market often can look like a brick wall. Selling and marketing today can often stand as a metaphor for a brick wall. If you were to hit the brick wall randomly with a hammer what would be the effect? There would hardly be any evidence that you had even been hitting it. You might knock off a few chips but come back a day or so later and there will be no evidence you were even there. That is the same effect of any broad marketing and advertising campaign. One may make a sale here or there but overall the effect is minimal and certainly not long-lasting and any marketer wanting to place his or her product or service on the market wishes for the ultimate in advertising success-name recognition. But imagine instead of hitting the wall all over one concentrated on just one brick. Now the demolition of the wall (and our metaphor for niche marketing) will begin to have some success. Highly lucrative results can be obtained by concentrating a specific advertising effort on a designated niche market.

In the fast-paced and ever-changing markets of today, marketers face an increasingly overwhelming need to place products in the correct market niche almost immediately. Failure to do so can result in the market not responding to a new product and substantial losses being realized by the manufacturer. Because of this marketers of new products and services must be able to identify the niche market they want to attract for their product or service and place it in the best possible position to attract the most revenue. The first step in determining the niche market they want to attract is actually knowing their product and its parameters. There are four factors that need to be considered:
1. The product itself-Marketers must have a thorough knowledge of the product or service. This allows the marketer to know what the possibilities can be in designing the marketing campaign. Is this item or service something people will need or just want? Will this item be reliable? Is this a one-time purchase or something that will be purchased repeatedly? All of these questions help determine what niche the marketer wants to attract.

When starting a business one very important questions you're going to want to ask right at first, is, "How are we going to bring in money?" It is important to carry a product, it is important to advertise a product, but if you don't know the value of what you are offering the consumer nor have you decided how to market and deliver your product, you are unlikely to be successful in selling your product for long.
Even a child who opens a lemonade stand (though they may not know it) has a business model. The example of a child at a lemonade stand would be a, "Cutting out the Middle Man," business model. Meaning the child, the manufacture, sells directly to its consumer, rather than using a distributor, or sales agent. By thus cutting out the middle man the child can reduce the price of the lemonade making it more affordable (which generally makes it more desirable) to the consumer.

With the multicultural denominations we have in America today, marketing must find new ways to include the interest, backgrounds, and needs of everyone.
Why is it important in America to know how to sell to the Hispanic market? Because we have the fourth largest population of Hispanics in the world! Find that amazing? In 2004, 40.4 million Hispanics lived in the U.S., 14 percent of the total population! They represent a combined 686 billion dollar purchasing power. (See Hispanic Trends: a People in Motion, a 2005 report by the Pew Hispanic Center.)

How To Write an Effective Creative Brief
The purpose of a creative brief is to provide a clear understanding of your company, its purpose, inner workings, and current projects, to a creative team who can take that information and apply it to a work of art, graphic design, sculpture, etc. that will be used for a creative representation of your company.
If you have been assigned to write the creative brief you need to write as if you are talking with someone who knows nothing about your company. In this way you can provide a clear and accurate understanding without assuming the creative team will know already who they are working for.
How to market yourself - effective marketing when you are the product
Why market yourself? To show potential employers the best side of you, and the you they need to hire.
Marketing yourself can be fun, who doesn't like a pat on the back and wink of approval, even if it is coming from your self. Giving yourself a pat on the back and a wink of approval is exactly what you want to, and have to do, to get accepted for the job you want.
When you are preparing to market yourself you must know what your strengths and specific skills are. If you do not know and feel confident about what your strengths are then before preparing a resume or throwing yourself into the market, you must take some time to first come to know your strengths and skills.
Social Marketing:
Social marketing is the campaign or program planning that is aimed to bring about social changes through commercial marketing. Social marketing is aimed at getting its target group to accept or deny certain behaviors.
Some common examples we see today are advertisements encouraging parents to talk to their children about drug use before the child is tempted to try drugs. These advertisements are generally targeted towards the parents rather than the children. For example the advertisers will first show a parent who is concerned about their child or children getting into drugs. The advertisement will then show a nervous parent approaching the child and then speaking to the child about drugs. The ending meaning of the advertisement is that no matter how nervous a parent may be, talking to their children is going to be worth it in the end. This advertisement is obviously aimed at getting parents to talk to their children and hopefully dramatically reduce the amount of drugs being used by teens - thus it is a behavior change the social marketing is trying to change.

Building brand loyalty can be much like taking care of a pet. It has less to do with the brand you feed them, and more to do with the way you treat them. As long as you continue feeding and loving your pet he will return your love by loving you. As a company you will need both to provide the needed products to your consumers as well as keep your customers happy.
Providing the product is not only about creating a product you think is in demand, but it takes researching the market to find out what is in demand. If you have a product, or you know what it is that you will be producing than researching the market is still important. You must find out what is currently being offered in the market you are entering, what needs that product is meeting, and what needs it has left to meet.
How to determine the best online business model
A business model is going to be a key factor in any business staying a float as it is the determining factor in how a company makes its profit. Making a profit is the reason most people start a business in the first place, so deciding on a business model before selling your product is going to be necessary.
The most basic of business models is the one I implemented at age six when I and my cousin teamed up to co-own a rock gathering and distributing company. The business model was simple: we provided a product, and sold it to our customers. We even added in an additional service by loading the rocks in our little red wagon and wheeling that wagon straight up to the customer's door. In this way our customers didn't even have to leave the comfort of their home to receive the goods we provided (usually collected from off the sidewalk in front of their home). This basic business model worked well for us since the product cost us nothing so we had only to sell a few rocks before earning the desired two dollars and being able to enter into a complete and very content retirement.

You know your web site is out there on the Internet, but do others? If they don't, your web site won't do you or them any good. You've got to let others know it exists. That's right - business marketing rule #1 is to advertise your web site address using all available resources. Put the URL on every piece of promotional material you publish - on your company stationery, on every employee's business card, on your signature line - include it everywhere you mention your company name.
Another way to increase your company's web site exposure is to take steps to increase its ranking within the various search engines. Creating useful keyword-rich content with links to your website is a great way to accomplish this goal. If you don't understand keywords and search engines, hire someone who does. It will be business marketing money well-spent.

Marketing Yourself for Success: Proven Personal Branding Strategies
I wish someone had shared the importance of personal branding with me much earlier in my career. Timing is everything, right? Even if I had been told about personal branding when I started my career in the 80's and I applied the personal marketing techniques with brilliance, it probably wouldn't have been very well received. Things are different today. In today's competitive environment, personal branding is a critical link to experiencing professional success.
Branding is not a new concept. It has been a key component of product marketing for as long as product has been sold. Personal branding on the other hand is fairly new. Tom Peters introduced the idea in the early 90's. Peter's position on personal branding as depicted in Fast Company Magazine in 1997 was put this way, "regardless of age, regardless of position, regardless of the business we happen to be in, all of us need to understand the importance of branding. We are CEOs of our own companies: Me, Inc. To be in business today, our most important job is to be head marketer for the brand called 'You'."
Some people have resisted the notion of personal branding based upon their belief that it represents bragging. Most of the people who believe this theory are women. Why? Beginning at a very young age, girls are taught that it is not nice to brag about themselves. Boys, on the other hand, are encouraged at a young age to express pride in their accomplishments. A recent study of executive women, conducted by Peggy Klaus, reveals the impact of women's inabilities to market themselves. In the study, nearly three-quarters of those interviewed recognized that advertising oneself is important, but 51 percent said they'd been told when they "tooted their own horn" they were judged too aggressive for a woman.

One of fiction's finest marketing minds, The Cheshire Cat, once told Alice in Wonderland something all business owners and marketers should remember:
"If you don't care where you are going, it doesn't make a difference which path you take."
For businesses bent upon success, it does matter which path you take. A positioning statement helps you chart your path to success because it lets all your audiences - internal and external - know where your organization stands in the battle for your consumers' minds.
Positioning: What Is It?
You should not confuse a positioning statement with your market position. As Harry Beckwith states in his book Selling the Invisible, "A position is a cold-hearted, no-nonsense statement of how you are perceived in the minds of your prospects. A positioning statement, by contrast expresses how you wish to be perceived. It is the core message you want to deliver in every medium."
Your positioning statement will be found where three items intersect:
- your business acumen/aspirations
- your market
- what truly differentiates you
Sex Sells!
An attractive woman has a decided advantage as sales representative over her male counterpart. This selling edge is primarily due to the existence of the glass ceiling found in most business organizations today. The glass ceiling (women are still arbitrarily held back from leadership positions) means that there are many more men in decision-making positions in businesses than women. Therefore, when cold calling, an attractive woman has a better chance of getting an appointment for a sales presentation, than does a man. Women are also given more attention in their presentations and less resistance up to a point, than a male sales representative or service industry professional (accountants, attorneys, consultants, bankers, etc.). This advantage has everything to do with sex and the physical appeal of a woman. It is clear to me as a sales trainer, coaching sales representatives and service industry professionals in the field, that male decision-makers often use a different part of their anatomy than their head to make their buying decisions.

How does a marketing plan relate to an organization's communications plan? What are the differences? Is the marketing plan just one aspect of the communications plan? Should one consider combining them into a single document?
A communications plan is a PART of your marketing plan. A communications plan is a focused strategy you use to get the word out about your business, product or service.
You may use a variety of communications tactics such as public relations, advertising and speaking engagements. Yes, it does identify who you are communicating to and what your message is, and where and how you will get that message out, and often has goals or objectives you are trying to achieve.
Here's the difference between the two
A marketing plan starts by creating a strong, strategic marketing foundation for your communications plan. It addresses the goals and objectives for your business, not just for your communications activities.
It addresses how you package, price and sell your product or service, not just how you talk about it. It takes into consideration your competitors and helps you develop a unique selling proposition to ensure your product or service is uniquely positioned in the minds of your prospects and customers.
And it ensures you have a way to track all of your marketing activities to create the greatest possible success for your business.
You need a marketing plan FIRST

It’s not unusual for entrepreneurs to find the whole idea of marketing intimidating. Even seasoned business owners often feel their marketing efforts aren’t working.
Don’t let marketing intimidate you. At its core, it’s really not much more than common sense – the key elements that form your plan. Add some creativity. This is what you’ll use to implement your plan and make it work. That’s the basis of marketing. Pretty simple once you break it down.
Let’s do a quick overview. There are a few key questions you need to answer upfront.
1. Is there a market for your product/service?
If the answer is no, go back to the drawing board. Start over. Because no matter how great you think your product is, if no one needs it/wants it/ buys it, you don’t have a business.
2. Can you make a profit?
Have you done the number crunching to ensure profitability? If not, go back and work your numbers. Figure out what you need to charge to make your profit on each item or service you sell. See what the competition is charging. Be in line but don’t necessarily be the cheapest. Your products may command higher fees (better ingredients, exciting packaging, snob appeal). Or you may choose to be the low price leader – but you’ll need more volume than you would at the high end. In any event, do your homework.

Many small and home based businesses know they need to market and yet, have little or no money to do so. Sadly, many use this as a reason not to market. Even on a limited budget you can promote and gain visibility for you and your business.
The following three strategies have proven extremely effective for countless businesses as they can for you.
1. Press Releases – Very effective and they offer a great deal of credibility when published. You must have a well written release that is pertinent to the media source you are sending it to. You can distribute press releases both online and off.
A quick Internet search under media resources in your city will bring up radio, television, newspapers and magazines in your area. To find online resources do a search under “free online press release distribution.” Numerous listings will come up. Be sure to utilize the free services when on a limited budget.
There are services you can pay for if you are so inclined. Two excellent resources for both free and paid are www.prweb.com and http://arrivenet.com/.
Prior to writing a press release, determine the following:
-Who is your target market?
-What is your target media?
-Who is the contact person at the media outlet?
-What is the timeframe for submission?
-Do you have an attention-grabbing headline?
-Do you know the who, what, when, where, why, how?
-Do you have good quotes, research and technical date if appropriate?
How to Organize your Marketing
"I hate sales pitches!" You may have felt this way yourself or heard others say it. If it's such a common response, what's the best way to organize your marketing to attract new clients and customers?
While getting all aspects of your marketing right can be complicated, the simple truth is that you can attract many more clients and be far more successful by doing just one thing.
To get the attention of your prospects and gain their trust and their business, base your marketing on the way your prospects make buying decisions. Just as a sweater needs to fit its owner, your marketing needs to fit your prospects.
Mirror Your Prospects' Decision Making Patterns
How do your prospects make purchasing decisions? A research study by Enquiro and Marketing Sherpa found that 86% of Internet users begin a search using Google. Of these, 63% scan the search results, looking for key phrases in order to determine which sites to visit.
If your target market doesn't find the key phrase they are looking for, they won't contact you. It doesn't matter how long you've been in business or how happy your clients are; if your marketing message doesn't match the language your prospects use, tens of thousands of people will n/ever find you. This is true even if they need and want your products and services.

Strategy #1: Change Your Mindset
That's right, change your mindset! It's probably the number one most important strategy when selling Big Ticket Items. Plenty of people are uncomfortable selling items that are priced above the $500 - $1000 mark.
It's the intangibles which make Big Ticket marketing tougher to come to grips with for many business people. They have questions like:
Will my customers accept a product priced this high?
How can I put a value on information?
Who's going to buy an island for one million dollars?
It's a lot easier to value a low ticket item like an E-book at $17 or $49 or $197. There are already books available that have prices in a similar range.
So how do you start the switch in mindset?
The best thing to do is to find a Big Ticket product that you believe in and just try marketing it to your list of customers!
That's what Joel Christopher did. He wanted to attend a particular seminar but it cost $1000. In those days, that was a lot of money for Joel. But the organizer told him that if he sold 3 seats he could get in free and earn affiliate commissions on every seat sold.
Now, Joel wasn't sure whether his existing list would accept a Big Ticket Item at that price. But he decided to go for it! He wrote up an email and sent it out. And, much to his surprise, he sold 2 seats in less than 2 days!
And that was a key turning point for Joel. His mindset was shifted.

Many people enter into the affiliate marketing arena with the hopes of making some quick money whilst doing the bare minimum amount work and preparation.
They expect to be making the type of money super affiliates make within five minutes of joining an affiliate program without doing anything other than send out a few ezine ads.
How do I know?
Because I was there, I did exactly the same thing, it was what the affiliate program owner's instructions said to do; sign-up, send some of our pre-made ads out to a few ezines and newsletters and wait for the money to come in. Oh and send them straight to this affiliate link so you'll be credited with the sale.
Ok, yeah, I did make a few sales, but only just enough to break even. It wasn't the sort of income they promised, so I thought to myself, 'well there must be other affiliate programs out there that'll make me more money', so I moved on to another one, and guess what, the cycle repeated.
Does this sound familiar to you? It's sometimes referred to as the 30 day average affiliate life span.

The N-word! We all know the value of networking and we feel we should be doing more of it. Unfortunately, for too many of us the very thought of attending an event where we have to mix and mingle with total strangers is enough to drive us into hiding until it's all over! What a pity we often force ourselves to go to a potentially great conference, but we're so busy worrying about the networking part that we forget to enjoy the event!
But networking is like so many other activities in life—it's easy when you know how. I call the process "Sowing and Growing Your Network" because it has two distinct, but equally important, parts.
Sowing Your Network
Over the years, people have often told me they don't "do" networking any more because it doesn't work. When I hear this, I know that person has committed at least one, and perhaps all three, of what I call the three cardinal sins of networking.
1. The first cardinal sin of networking is selling. Oh dear, is that what you thought it was all about? Well, although networking can be an integral part of the selling process, the two are distinctly different. Have you ever been circulating happily at a networking event (even at one of your own conferences or tradeshows), when suddenly someone has you backed into a corner trying to sell you mutual funds? That's the cardinal sin!

‘Tis the season to be planning. Most business people are familiar with strategic planning. But what about your marketing communications program? Do you have a plan for that?
For those of you with marketing communications anxiety, here’s a step-by-step guide to follow to create a plan.
1. Begin with the basics. Marketing communications involves what you say about your business (message) and who you say it to (audience). Start your plan with this information.
2. Solidify your identity. Define your logo and colors and use them consistently. Make sure they’re on your signage, business cards, web site – anywhere you’re seen by your audience. Invest in a professionally-produced logo. It will reflect positively on your entire operation.
3. Provide basic information. Every business needs a brochure and web site -- professionally-done materials that cover the basics, like products, services, people, facilities, etc.

Postcards may be one of the best kept secrets of modern marketing. They produce even better results now than in the past. That's probably because postcards deliver information the way people want to get it today ...fast and with little or no effort.
Use Postcards to Generate Website Traffic and Sales Leads
A brief captivating message on a postcard with an enticing offer sent to the right prospects will generate a flood of traffic to your website - or a large number of sales leads.
Keep your postcard simple. Make it look at first glance like a message from a friend instead of like an advertisement. This creates a pleasant emotional response from readers even though they quickly realize that it is a commercial message.
State the biggest benefit you offer to customers. Then briefly add a few other advantages or features you provide. End with a compelling reason for prospects to contact you...or to go to your website for more details. It's that simple.

Effective marketing plays a critical role in businesses that are successful. How effectively the marketing plan you develop markets your business, will ultimately determine your degree of success or failure.
The key elements of a successful marketing plan are to:
1. Know your customers--their likes, dislikes and expectations.
2. Know your competitors--their strengths and weaknesses. Only by identifying these factors, can you develop a marketing strategy that will allow you to anticipate and fulfill your customers needs, better understand your competitors and identify changes in the marketplace that can affect your bottom line.
The purpose of a marketing plan is to define your market, i.e.,identify your customers and competitors, to outline a strategy for attracting and keeping customers and to identify and anticipate change. It takes careful planning and a thorough understanding of the marketplace to develop a strategy that will ensure success.
Generally, the first and most important step in understanding the market is to study it through market research. For example, in the case of a franchise, the franchisor has already done the market research and developed a marketing plan, so you will need to review the plan the franchisor has provided. Look over the plan to determine what product/service you will offer and write a description of it.

When developing a publicity campaign for their business many owners overlook the importance of trade magazines and journals as vehicles for reaching new customers. While mass media publications have widespread readership, the targeted nature of trade publications make the information that appears within them even more powerful.
Unlike general interest publications, readers of trade magazines and journals already have an established interesting a specific subject. for example, it is safe to assume that readers of American Printer are generally people who work in or have an interest in that subject.
Writing a how-to-article that appears in a trade publication establishes your business as an "expert" in that specific area. Think about it -reading an article written by your company in trade magazines provides a different level of exposure and a new image of your business to potential customers.
Here are a six guidelines for writing material for trade magazines:
1. Familiarize yourself with trade magazines in your industry - Trade magazines usually publish industry news, case studies and educational articles. New is primarily written by the editors. Case studies and educational articles are available for contributing authors. case studies describe how a service solved a particular problem. Educational articles teach the reader how to do a particular job or activity. These two types can be great in establishing additional credibility among potential customers, portraying the author as an "expert" in that area.

Cause marketing is a relationship between a for-profit and a nonprofit that brings in money and resources for the nonprofit, while providing credibility and goodwill for the business. According to the IEG Sponsorship Report, this category grew to $733 million in the US in 2001. There are a number of reasons for that growth. A Cone Communications survey found that: - 80 percent of Americans have a more positive image of companies that support a cause they care about - nearly two-thirds of Americans say they would likely switch brands or retailers to one associated with a good cause - more than half said they would pay more for a cause marketer’s products or services - 87 percent of employees at organizations with a cause marketing program feel a strong sense of loyalty to their company as opposed to 67 percent of those at companies that do not support causes
As you can see, adopting good causes can be beneficial, but your company’s involvement should be planned just as you plan any other business activity. Here are five steps to developing an effective cause marketing program.
Choose Your Cause Strategically. Search for a single charitable cause that you and your employees can believe in, as well as one that helps advance your business objectives. For instance, a company may choose an educational cause to ensure it has a continuing pool of well-educated workers. Many companies seek issues that align with their products, services or geographic service area. Others look for issues that resonate with niche audiences or that differentiate them in the marketplace. You may want to consider choosing an emerging issue. This way, your company will be a pioneer rather than just another in a list of companies.

Every Christmas Eve, a burglar named Santa busts into homes around the world, but he has never been charged with B&E. He has one of the best, most positive brands around and it continues to inoculate him against any hint of impropriety, as it has for generations. Why does Santa's brand remain so strong? Because Santa is:
* Consistent
* Unique
* Customer-focused
* Viral
Let's examine these to see what lessons we can learn. First off, Santa has a positioning statement and has used it to stay true to his mission for decades. (For more on positioning, see: http://www.hoover-ink.com/think_newsletters/think_may2002.htm)
It is this consistency that has helped him build a brand franchise that is the envy of other marketers. No matter what kind of communication vehicle he uses, the message is measured against the positioning statement.

Tip 1: Insulate yourself against the impact of change by increasing the number of products and services you offer...and by using a variety of different marketing methods. Only a small portion of your total business will be affected if the sales of one product declines or the response to one marketing method drops.
Tip 2: Customers are prospects too. Stay in contact with them. Find or develop other products or services you can offer them. It's easier to make a sale to a previous customer than to someone who never bought from you.
Tip 3: Avoid making any claim that sounds exaggerated ...even if it is true. A bold claim creates doubt in your prospect's mind and jeopardizes the sale. Reduce any bold claims to a more believable level.

One of the most cost effective marketing strategies you can utilize is an online newsletter, also referred to as an E-Zine.
You can provide valuable content to your customers and potential customers with an E-Zine. The beauty of utilizing the Internet to distribute your information is often people will forward your information to others who have similar interest.
The key to success with an E-Zine is consistency in distribution. It won't be beneficial to have a sporadic schedule. Distribution of your online publication should be done like clockwork. With all the automation tools available you can develop a system that is relatively trouble free.
For many, the greatest challenge will be the development of content. There are a few ways you can handle this. One, take a day to write several articles and put them in a file that you can easily access. That way, the writing is over and done.
Second, have others write articles for you. Many people are anxious to write for online newsletters.
Third, a quick Internet search is bound to produce several places you can access articles that are there for the taking. Usually, the only requirement is that you give full credit to the authors.

Marketing is actually the opposite of manipulating. When marketing is done with integrity, it is about the consumer and their wants and needs.
Marketing is not about using trickery or high pressure tactics to get people to buy stuff they don't want.
It is about learning and listening to what the potential buyers says his problem is and then, show him how your product/service will help him solve that problem.
When you see marketing as problem solving you take your ego out of the equation and become more focused on your customer, his situation and how your product/service fits with his need(s).
It is no longer a case of overcoming objections to your offer, instead the exchange becomes collabarative, you feel "useful" not "using".
The marketing experience, then becomes dynamic, enlivening and more effective as it is now, more about educating and sharing value with your client.
Marketing is how a business grows, but it does not have to kill your integrity or con your customer.

Entrepreneurs pay a lot of attention to the mechanics of marketing. They take workshops, read books, and hire consultants to find out how to do the best job they possibly can. With my own clients, I often discover that their knowledge of marketing techniques is quite good already. What they might lack is the right kind of marketing attitude.
Do any of the attitudes described below sound familiar? If so, you may be sabotaging your own marketing efforts. Read on for some possible solutions.
1. "I shouldn't have to market." If you are good enough at what you do, you tell yourself, clients should just come to you. Marketing is for products, not professionals. You have years of training and experience in your specialty, why should you have to spend your precious time on marketing?
This perception is extremely common among consultants and professionals, although many won't admit it. The fact is that successful marketing is a necessary part of business ownership. If you could get all the paying work you wanted without having to market, why wouldn't everyone be self-employed?
If you perceive marketing as a dirty business, try thinking of it as the diapers you need to change in order to have the joys of being a parent. But instead of focusing on what you dislike, tie your marketing chores to your vision of a successful business.

How often have you responded to email from those in your downlines asking for advice on how best to run their online businesses and finding it increasingly frustrating that things JUST aren't working out as planned?
I myself see the same problems day and daily and it always point back to the same core issues. Let me explain one of them...
The very ethos of network marketing is based on sharing the products and services that you have found helpful in your journey towards success. The fact that you get paid for this is definitely a BIG bonus but networking can be found in everyday examples where people aren't being paid. For instance when people
see a great movie, they tell others who in turn pass it on to create a lockbuster hit.
Word of mouth definitely is the best form of advertising and networking. The main point in the above example is that folks are being honest about their observations and this is picked up on by their fellows and so and and so forth down the line.

Need vs Want
I've seen many articles on this topic. Do people buy what they need or what they want. Some writers stress that they buy what they want and vice versa. The truth is there is a market for both.
How many times have you gone to the super market for milk, butter or bread, and came back with ice cream or some other snacks. It happens all the time right? Supermarkets have this down pat. Did you ever notice that you have to walk past many want products to get to the needs.
Why don't you use this strategy in your marketing. For example, when my computer consultants go on a service call they are instructed to listen to the clients, and probe them for information on what they like doing on line. Lets say they like playing games. When the consultant is finished with the job we leave them a package. Besides an invoice, we leave them a referral letter telling them if they refer two people to us we will give them two free hours of service, and a list of ways they can use them. It's ok because the lifetime value of a customer is gold. Then they write on the back of their business card 20% off and a code number for some great new software game we have in stock.

Each of these 11 marketing tips is based on a marketing strategy or tactic proven to boost sales. How many are you using?
Tip 1: Your customers buy your product or service to feel a certain way after their purchase. Keep this in mind as you develop your ads, web pages and other sales tools. Use vivid word pictures to dramatize the pleasant feelings your customers experience when they use what you are selling. It intensifies their desire to have it and motivates them to buy now.
Tip 2: Continually test new advertising and marketing methods...and old methods you never tried before. A good guideline to follow is to allocate 80 percent of your budget to proven promotions and 20 percent to testing new things. Most businesses using this formula keep growing regardless of changing market conditions and intense competition.

Printed material is just as important today as it was before the Internet. With sp*a*m getting out of hand, it’s a wise choice to rev up, update or create printed material, ads, catalogs, direct mail, press releases, letters, templates and the like.
You will notice that I didn't add brochures to this list. Brochures are not a good investment for a first piece. When someone asks for a brochure and you don't have one, this doesn't mean you ignore their request. Worse scenario, you may run wildly around using up a large portion of your year’s marketing budget completing one.
If you move or update your materials frequently, it isn't wise to spend thousands of dollars on new material. Here are a few alternatives. You can use a professionally created folding business card as a main document. Another option to expensive letterhead is to print your own in a two-pass process. Use a color printer in the first pass for your logo and use a black and white pass through for the content. Use Kinko's if you don't have a color printer (http://www.kinkos.com). At Kinko’s you can send them a file via Internet, have them print the color portion on high quality paper.

Can you summarize how your website is uniquely better to serve the needs of consumers than your competition? If you can, chances are you will see much higher traffic, sales and profits.
Not being obviously unique is one of the chief reasons websites fail to make a profit.
Websites and products can be unique based on several criteria:
* Unique product - no one else has it. * Unique price - same product, best price. * Unique market - same product, only in German or for Teens. * Unique expertise - Is your site the result of your own unique experience, education or expertise? This can be your key to differentiation. * Unique service - same product, better support.
Of course, having a combination can make your site even more appealing: Better price AND better service, for example, can be a powerful combination.

If you have a business, you need a selling sentence.
Sometimes called the Defining Sentence or the Secondary Statement, the Selling Sentence is the group of words that clarify and refine the nature of your business when seen or heard with the name or logo of your business. You tell ‘em what you do for them' with your Selling Sentence.
The Selling Sentence clearly differentiates your business in the eyes of your current and potential customers or clients. "When it absolutely, positively, has to be there overnight" reinforces the FedEx brand.
McDonald's has used Selling Sentences for individual products. "Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun"

You're at a networking meeting and someone asks for your business card. You hand them a fairly typical card with your company's name, your name and title, and contact information on it. What happens next? Do they get in touch with you? Do they become a client?
Nine times out of ten, the conversation ends when you hand someone you've just met your business card, and you never hear from them again. Wouldn't you like to use these opportunities to generate interest, get a conversation going and have prospects contact you?
All of your marketing materials should be written and designed to prompt prospects to take action. When you meet potential clients or customers, whether in person or through your brochure or web site, you want to lead them to ask you how you can help them and to call or email you later for more information. A typical business card does neither of these things.

Imagine spending the same amount of money on marketing and performing the same amount of work to deliver your products or services, but earning more money and keeping more after your expenses. That's what happens when you institute elite positioning for your business.
With elite positioning, you are not any old accountant, cabinetmaker, software maker or fitness trainer. You deliver superiority or exclusivity and therefore charge (and get!) more. Here are five ways to add an aura of extraordinariness to your business.
1. Specialization. If as an accountant, you only work with family businesses, clients perceive you as more familiar with and more skillful in dealing with their unique issues and circumstances. Whether or not you really have that much more expertise is not the crucial factor. The clients' knowledge that you specialize makes them comfortable paying more for your services.
Secrets of Building and Maintaining Marketing Momentum
Some people seem to steadily increase their income while others just make enough to pay the bills. What's the difference between the people who make millions and the people who struggle all their lives to get ahead?
If you want to attract more clients in order to build a more profitable business you need three things. You need clear goals, knowledge of how to market your business and a plan of action. Your marketing is like the proverbial three-legged stool. To function effectively, all three legs need to be solidly in place.
Without clear goals you won't move forward. Without marketing knowledge you'll waste your time instead of pulling in many more clients. Without a plan of action, your marketing won't get done.
Setting Your Marketing Goals Staying on track can be a struggle, whether you are trying to stick to a diet or get your marketing in shape. How can you get started and maintain your marketing momentum? What you need to do is make a commitment to specific marketing goals.

You must realize that your product or service cannot be all things to all people. Very few items on the market today have universal appeal. Even when dealing in basic commodities like table salt or aspirin, marketing people have gone to all sorts of extremes to create brand awareness and product differentiation. If your product or service is properly positioned, prospective purchasers or users should immediately recognize its unique benefits or advantages and be better able to assess it in comparison to your competition's offering. Positioning is how you give your product or service brand identification.
Positioning involves analyzing each market segment as defined by your research activities and developing a distinct position for each segment. Ask yourself how you want to appear to that segment, or what you must do for that segment to ensure that it buys your product or service. This will dictate different media and advertising appeals for each segment.

There are several ways to ensure that your adverts are responsive: let me outline my top ten response boosting techniques:
1. An attention grabbing headline is crucial. Yes, headlines are one of the most important elements within your web pages. The majority of professional copywriters have been known to spend as much time on headlines as they do on all other elements of an advert or web page combined. The purpose of a headline is to grab your targeted prospect's attention and pull them into your advert or web page copy.
2. Get inside the mind of your target audience. Don't write for everyone, write for a real person. When you are writing your advert address it to one specific individual who is representative of your target audience.

You will always have competitors. You cannot control their activity. But you can minimize their impact on your business. Here are 3 ways you can position yourself to generate sales with little or no competition.
1. Use Unconventional Marketing Methods
Most businesses use the same marketing methods as their competitors. Adapt some unconventional marketing methods to distinguish yourself from your competitors. Your unique marketing will attract more attention and get more sales.
For example, most online businesses only use online marketing methods to generate traffic to their website. By including some offline marketing, they can bypass the heavy competition online and produce more traffic - and more sales.
Tip: Print your best small ad on a postcard and mail it to prospects in your targeted market. Postcards are inexpensive and easy to use. Most recipients will read a brief message on a postcard.

Making your ideas successful can be done using alternate writing styles.
Certain types of writing involve doing your utmost to persuade the reader to accept your recommendations. Business examples of persuasion include:
