How to choose employees for your manufacturing plant

When it comes to hiring employees, it is important to find a reliable person you can trust that also has the experience needed to do the job correctly.

Manufacturing in particular is a trade that must have hard working employees in order to do the job right. But finding and choosing hard working manufacturing employees can be difficult.

The following are some tips to help you choose hard working manufacturing employees.

Decide how you will fill the positions.

There are a number of ways you can go about hiring the right manufacturing employees. You can offer the job to people you already know, such as family members or friends. This is common with small businesses or businesses that require a skilled trade, such as manufacturing.

Another good way to find a hard working employee is to ask for referrals from friends or other people in the trade. Employees who come recommended often make excellent workers, since the people who recommend them are concerned with their own reputations as well.

Or, you can advertise for the position, accept resumes, then conduct an interview and hire someone that way.

If you are hiring someone through advertising in an Employment section or through online job databases, make sure you write a detailed description of not only the position, but the potential employee's responsibilities as well.

Check references

It's crucial that you check references of your potential employees, no matter how impressed you were with them in the interview. Ask the potential employees' former employers if they were hard workers and could do the job accurately and efficiently. You will also want to match their dates of employment with that on their resume, as well as check to make sure they have completed the levels of education they say they have. This is important for preventing further problems down the road.

Consider a trial period.

Many employees spend a great deal of time and money hiring and training an employee, only to have them be the wrong fit or not work hard enough. For this reason, it may be a good idea to consider hiring someone on a trial basis; 30-day or up to 3-month trial periods are common. Make sure they know this before hiring, however, or put it in the contract.

During the trial employment period, make sure you observe certain traits that will be good indications that someone will be a hard working manufacturing employee. Some of the things you should watch for include:

• Does the employee come to work on time or is he habitually late with no explanation?
• Does the employee leave at the specified time, or is he willing stay and finish the job if necessary? Or, does the employee leave an extra few minutes early every day?
• Does the employee spend his time working, or is he socializing, taking too many smoke breaks, or spending time on the phone?
• Does the employee take reasonable lunch breaks, or is he or she adding an extra 5 or 10 minutes each time?
• If you hire someone who is consistently arriving late, leaving early, or chatting on the phone during work hours, you may want to consider finding someone else. For this reason, it's a good idea to have a number of potential employees to look at, should one fall through.

These are all things you should look out for when choosing a manufacturing employee.
