Improve efficiency with a few small changes

One of the best ways to improve efficiency in your manufacturing plant is to implement lean manufacturing. Lean manufacturing focuses on reducing cost, increasing turnover time by constantly, and methodically eliminating activities that do not add any value to the manufacturing process. Lean manufacturing gets rid of things that are not needed in the manufacturing process so that your manufacturing plant can run as efficiently as possible.

Here are the steps that you will need to follow to implement lean manufacturing in your manufacturing plant.

Step one:
Make sure that your upper management or senior level management is onboard and are willing to practice what they are preaching. This is important because employees often learn by example and nobody sets an example for employees like your upper management does. In order for lean manufacturing to work, it must be started from the top and work its way down.

Step two:

Choose a project leader. When choosing a project leader you are going to want to choose somebody who gets along well with everyone. You also want to make sure that they are well liked and respected by their employees. The project leader should also have a persuasive personality so that they can convince people that these changes are going to be for the better. This person is important because they are going to be responsible for bringing together teams from a cross functional environment.

Step three:

Choose a small group of people, about 23 to 5 people, and make sure that each person is from different departments. When picking this small group keep in mind that these people are going to be working with the project leader in implementing lean manufacturing, so they should be able to handle responsibility. In addition, since these people are going to be in charge of implementing lean manufacturing you want to choose people who are enthusiastic about it and who support it.

Step four:

After you have picked the group of people that will be in charge of making the change to lean manufacturing you will need to begin training them on lean manufacturing. In training them, you will need to teach them the various lean tools and techniques that they will be using. Make sure that they understand what is being asked of them because they will need to teach people under them about lean manufacturing.

Step five:

Once you have finished teaching the small team about the tools and techniques that are used in lean manufacturing you will need to choose the tools and techniques that will work best for your manufacturing company. You can have the team help you decide which tools and techniques to use or you can make the decision on your own, but teamwork is a major part of getting things done.

Step six:

Prioritize the tools and techniques that you are going to be using so that you can begin introducing them in your company in the order that you feel is the most important. When prioritizing you need to keep in mind that not all of the tools and techniques are going to work for your company so you do not need to prioritize them all, just the ones you plan to use in your company to make your manufacturing plant more efficient.

Step seven:

Address the entire workforce as to what you are doing. When you are addressing them, you are going to want to tell them what lean manufacturing is, but you also want to tell them why you choose to switch over to lean manufacturing, how it will affect them, and what is going to be required from them as employees.

Step eight:

When switching over to lean manufacturing do not switch the entire company over at once. You want to select one area and one project to switch over to lean manufacturing. Choose an area that will be easy to switch over so that you and your employees can see immediate results.

Step nine:
Continue with the program for at least two to three months so that you can learn from your mistakes. Once everything is under control, you can begin switching other areas of your manufacturing plant over to lean manufacturing one at a time.
