What you need to know about total quality management in manufacturing

Total Quality Management also known as TQM is a popular way of improving the production results within the workplace. It is also an attempt to improve the quality of finished products that your customers will buy. Total quality management places great emphasis on maintaining a high quality of customer satisfaction.

Mission and Purpose
You must first understand the mission of total quality management before you can go any further. The basis behind total quality management is in finding ways to improve the quality of return, improve the quality of your products, and ultimately to improve the quality of life. Basically the purpose is meeting the needs of your customers but also meet the needs of those within your company structure. Once you understand the sole purpose behind total quality management you can then begin to implement your changes.

In manufacturing quality assurance through statistical methods is a key element in organization. This is generally done by sampling random products and testing them for the most important things so that the end result is close to flawless. Statistical distributions are tracked and if there is a mistake it is fixed before the product is actually manufactured or produced. The hope in total quality management in manufacturing is that the products become cheaper to produce because of the efficiency and performance improvements.

Key Characteristics
In order to be successful in implementing total quality management strategies there are three characteristics necessary:

Participative management- this refers to the involvement of every member of your company in the management process. In other words, managers will set your important policies and make important decisions with the input of those that have to adhere to those policies. This helps with motivation of company workers as they feel a part of the whole process, and helps upper management successful carry out their operation tasks.

Continuous process improvement- this characteristic is simply recognizing small incremental gains towards your goal of reaching total quality. This is a manager's willingness to invest in the small things now in order to reap larger benefits in the future. It is a long-term approach.

Utilization of teams- Team work is a necessity for the success of any company, and it is no different with total quality management. By taking this approach you enable your workers to understand their roles with the problems at hand, share knowledge, and align their work goals with the entire company.

Implementing Total Quality Management

A man by the name of Jablonski has come up with five phases of successfully implementing total quality management:

1. Preparation. It is during this phase when the management needs to decide whether or not to go ahead with the total quality management program. This may entail trainings, identifying outside consultants, goals, and corporate policies.
2. Planning. This is where a detailed plan is drafted including things such as your budget, and your schedule; resources needed to begin your plan, and how the program will be supported.
3. Assessment. This requires a thorough self-assessment; from management and from customers and clients. Your assessment will be on the qualities and characteristics of members of the company as well as the company itself.
4. Implementation. You should already have a fairly good idea by this time about your return on investment in the total quality management program so this phase is the time when you will do much of your training. You will need to train your support personnel, managers, and company workers. Be sure that your trainings teach your team members everything they need to know about total quality management; how it will benefit them and the company, specific roles, and expectations.
5. Diversification. Diversification activities include things as trainings, rewards, partnering roles, and supporting. These are all things that will help in being successful with total quality management.

This may take some time to get up and running, but this is a basis for what you need to know about total quality management in manufacturing. Stick with it and see how it can improve your company.
