Social media has become the new frontier of business promotion, yet many business owners are still unsure as to what they can do with it. Because of the rising popularity of this type of marketing, it has become crucial for every business owner to become educated with what social media networking can do for their business. One of the major advantages of using social media networking is the low cost. While you will need to dedicate some time and effort to maintaining it, after you get it up and running, initially there is no cost to get started. This makes it a viable option for even the smallest business, with the smallest (or perhaps non existent) marketing budget.

In addition, to being low cost, social media networking has been shown to be effective in reaching those segments of your target market that may have been missed, by more traditional marketing methods. This means that for any business that is not online, they are missing out on a potential increase of sales. One of the best ways to get started with social media networking is to know what you can do with it. Here are some things you can do with social media to build your business-
- Find out what people are talking about-Many business owners make the mistake of thinking that market research is only important when they are starting their business. The reality is that trends change and new fads come up. You need to stay in touch with what your customers and others are talking about, in order to keep your company relevant and current, in the market. There are online tools that will help you to search multiple social media sites, and find out what is being talked about. You want to know what is being said about your company and worse yet, if no one is talking about it. The bottom line is that you don't want others to form an online presence, for your business. One of the best ways to create your online presence is to know what is being said, and be able to respond to it.
- Build a relationship with your customers-The essence of good marketing is building a relationship with your customers. Using social media networking can allow you to position your company, as the expert in your field. You can establish a relationship of trust and creditability with your customers. Then when they decide to purchase, they will turn to you as the solution to their need or want. However, this is an area where caution needs to be exercised. You don't want to only be pushing sales on your social media sites. If you do not offer something of value to your customers, they are likely to begin blocking you and move on to follow someone else. You want to make sure that you are posting information that is of value to your customers. If you fail to do this, there is little chance that your social media networking will be successful.
- You can offer an incentive to your customers-One of the easiest ways to use social media networking is to offer your customers an incentive to seek you out. You can release a sneak peek of a new product or service, offer a coupon or discount, or even a free sample. You want to engage with your customers and find a way to keep them seeking you out. Keep in mind that you should create a sense of urgency with these incentives, (like an expiration date), because that has been shown to get customers more interested. If you are creative with how you do this, you may find that it generate additional buzz, and pulls more people to look at your social media networking marketing.
