As a business manager you may feel like all you do throughout the day is solve problems in the business. This is pretty accurate for most business managers. A large part of being a business manager involves being able to figure out solutions all while keeping calm and under control. This is a crucial component of being a business leader. Successful business managers are the ones that understand there is really no end to the problems that they may have to deal with and they learn to take that in stride. Here is what you need to know about how to solve problems at your business-

- Gather the information that you need-Successful business managers know that they need to gather the pertinent information before just making an "off the cuff" decision. Taking the time to figure out what the real issue is and how it will affect your business is crucial to coming up with the right solution. It is only when you have the necessary information that you can make the decision that will solve the problem. If you fail to gather the necessary information before trying to solve a problem you may end up with a bigger problem then before you started.
- Learn why the problem occurred-Another important component of problem solving in a business setting is to learn why the problem occurred. This information can have a direct bearing on how you solve the problem. You will need to determine if the problem is human error, machinery related, influenced by factors inside or outside of the business along with a host of different other issues before you can come up with the right solution. Not knowing why a problem occurred will not help you with solving the problem and keeping it from happening again.
- Come up with different solutions-Once you have all the information about the problem and why it occurred then you can move on to coming up with solution for it. Most problems can benefit from some brainstorming. You may need to consider several different solutions before you decide on one. You may want to consult with the people that are involved in order to get their input.Take your time to consider all your options so that you can implement the right solution. While this doesn't always guarantee that you won't have to make changes it decreases the chances that you will have to do so.
- Continue to monitor the situation-It won't be enough to put a solution in place and then just walk away. You will need to monitor the problem to make sure that you have implemented the right solution. Keep in mind that depending on the problem it may take some time before the solution takes hold. By monitoring the situation you can be aware of how well it is working and whether further steps may be needed. Again, at this part of the problem solving process you should also check with the people directly involved and see if they feel if the problem has been adequately solved, as well.
- Make changes if necessary-Many times business managers find that they need to implement another solution to a problem. You should not let this discourage you. Sometimes the first solution to any problem is not as effective as you had hoped. This is not a reflection of your business management skills but rather in indication of the dynamic nature of business. You should simply begin the process listed above and work your way through the steps to determine another possible solution for the problem that you are dealing with.
